Hand in notice now?

I'm just wondering if anyone has ever regretted failing to hand in their notice to leave by the end of the summer and instead handed it in at this point in the year, i.e. to leave by Christmas?

I came very close to giving notice in May but didn't do so due to personal circumstances that I was more focussed on then. I requested certain things for next year which I wasn't given a definitive answer to, but was hoping it would pan out. I've now found out I haven't got what I wanted and don't want to pretend that I am happy! However, it doesn't make any material difference whether I give notice now or in the autumn. Does any one have any experience of leaving at Christmas that can help me decide what to do? I'm just wondering if I give notice now what the reaction might be.

Personally if I felt that I had been badly treated I would wait until the latest day I could do so. Why would you give them:
a More notice than you need to
b the chance to put more shit on you in your new timetable

I decided I was leaving by June/July when I discovered I'd been lied to aboit a promotion and various other things.

Didn't say a word and handed my notice in on October 31st - the last possible moment. Having made my decision, my last few months at the school were so much easier. I knew if I did it earlier, I'd be bullied and I wanted to limit that.

Am in the same boat as you - leaving at Christmas.

Will hand in my notice in October, won’t be telling anyone at work that I’m leaving until then either as it’ll get around.

For context, I’ve only been in this post since Easter but have quickly discovered the culture of the school isn’t suited to me at all, and the senior team haven’t been supportive about issues I’ve raised. I feel very guilty about it but I can’t work effectively or happily in that environment.

Good luck! We absolutely have to put ourselves first and do what is best for our own well-being.

Thanks so much everyone for your replies. They really have helped me think more logically about the situation. There isn't any point assisting them in replacing me by giving notice before the deadline in October, so I'll probably leave it until then.

October 31st. Good for you.

You have until October 31st to resign - even resigning now won’t make a difference so I’d leave it closer to the time. Theoretically you can resign up to 11:59pm on the 31/10 but if you want to leave it to the last minute. That week or day is fine.
