TA and kids won't listen!

Feeling a bit deflated at the mo. Y1 TA, started 1st job last Sept and cannot get the children to listen to me! Very demoralising as I see CT and other TAs managing fine. If I take a small group I could easily spend the entire time setting out expectations, reminding them of consequences etc and get nothing done. CT/other TAs model behaviour management and yet I do the same things but nothing changes. CT is amazingly supported and tells me I'm doing great and will get there and I know other TAs are more experienced, but I'm still finding it so hard😢😢 Anyone else felt as useless as me??

You need to ask for more constructive support. This is in the children's best interests as well as your own.

If they are messing you about, you will have to give sanctions and follow through so they know you mean business. Take a look at the behaviour management policy (it will be on the school's website) and follow it to the letter all the time. You also need to build your relationships with the children. Play duties can be a great time to do this. Chat to them, get to know them. They need to know you like them and are there for them, but you will take no shit! Being strict (but warm) is kind.

You say you remind them of consequences, but do you ever give consequences and follow through? If you don't, I imagine you'll only need to do this a few times before it makes a huge difference!

I agree- it's pointless reminding them of consequences if those consequences never happen. Say it like you mean it then follow through.
