ChatGBT - AI changing homework as we know it?

Just that, really. What are you currently doing to mitigate the issues with all the potential cheating that is bound to come off the access to advanced AI technology? Of course we run checks but I doubt that we will be able to tell human from AI before long, if not already. So will HW be a thing of the past or shall we look at flipping and asking students to do it in class?

Use past paper questions as homework. ChatGTP is not good at writing short, exam style answers which actually hit marking points- or it's not for my subject anyway.

To be honest, my view of homework is that students get out what they put in- if they try hard, they get useful feedback from me. If they google and manage to find the mark scheme and copy it out word for word, they've gained nothing.

Homework is solely additional practice for students, it's not used for anything graded.

I do also teach on a BTEC qualification- but for that it's fairly easy to spot ChatGTP- it usually makes up citations that sound plausible but don't exist. If I have any doubts, I google the reference list!

Students still have to analyse and discuss their own data, which it can't really do for them.

A couple tried this week in one of my class but it was riddled with errors which ultimately cost them marks.

The issue is that it completely makes up things while sounding totally plausible. Definitely not something to rely on for facts, quotes, citations etc!

I've made good use of it already for my own homework though. It has written me a couple of nice model texts for my class. I had to tweak them a bit, but way quicker than starting from scratch.

It's the future, we have to roll with it.
