Not paid for lunch??

Is this a thing everywhere or just at my indie school? Contracted 8-4 (but we all know that there's a good 5+ hours a week at home too). So of 45 hours a week, I'm paid 35. Hmm

Lunchtime is not directed, according to the burgundy book, so it's unpaid in schools which follow STPCD.
Check your contract.

Ok thanks

Sounds like you have a very long lunch or are you adding in the 5 hours you work outside of school in your figures?

Lunch is unpaid and is therefore the one time in which you can't be directed to work - basically the only way to ensure teachers have the right to use the toilet at anytime between 8.30 and 3.30. We only get 40 minutes at mine and all of that is unpaid even though for the first 5 minutes you're dismissing class and locking up and we have to be at the door welcoming them with starters on the board at the first bell which is five minutes before the end of lunch.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that my SLT are seriously CF though.

@swallowedAfly oh yes I'm adding in additional (at least) 5 hours of work. Lunch is an hour but of course includes dismissing and then prepping for the afternoon so half hour is much more realistic.

What's CF?

CF = cheeky fucker.

Whilst there are many, many things I could complain about in schools, I've never worked in a job in which the lunch hour is paid and in most professional industries working through much or all of your lunch is the norm.

Check your contract - chances are you won’t be paid for that time.

Thanks yeh undirected time it seems

The difference is in most other professional jobs, you can also go for a wee or make a cup of tea whenever you fancy, though...

I work at an independent but don’t have hours. A hour for lunch and there is a duty rota, but you only do it on a day you have a free the period before so can get lunch/ a break yourself. There are also lunch time meetings.

But it is a 6 day a week boarding school so total different expectations, evenings, mornings, Saturdays. But on the other hand, you don’t have to stay onsite if you have a free (I have popped home to check on my dogs).

Lunch is definitely unpaid! I’ve never known it to be otherwise…

At my school we all get half an hour unpaid lunch break.

I don’t get paid for lunch. I’m a HLTA and spend half my lunch prepping to cover in the afternoon. But I’d rather do that than work at home.
DH is in private sector and doesn’t get lunch pay. Don’t think anyone does.
