Reception- Y1 transition help. Tearing my hair out.

Everything has been so cut back that there are no class TAs available to support Y1.

Reception is great, completely play based and freeflow, but they are completely and utterly unprepared for Y1 and I'm sick of it. I'm sick of being the horrible teacher making little children sit down all day. I hate that we have to sit all day with workbooks while they look out the window and see children digging and having the best time.

It's a very mixed catchment. I'd generally estimate around half achieving GLD, some not far off, and we always have a group who need a significant amount of
support.

Most of the class are now learning to write their surname but some are still working on first names.

In the salt trays they're copying pre cursive patterns. It's also something that they don't find as intense doing completely on their own, because they have never been told that they have to go and sit at a table and do something all by themselves. Every task in R is supported by an adult.

How can every task in reception be supported by an adult with 30 kids? How many TA's does your reception teacher have?
Also, to support kids you don't have to be sat at a table with them. I've noticed increasingly few teachers walk around the classroom these days, why is that? You get them sat then you walk amongst the tables, keeping them focused, looking over shoulders at what they have done so far? Honestly when mine were that age as a parent I'd have been booking an appt with the head if they were spending their day in yr1 tracing their finger in salt trays and shaving foam!!!

Also, if you get the kids doing their pre-cursive shapes with a pencil and paper you then have some nice evidence for yourself, to track progress against objectives? How can you monitor what they are doing in the salt tray they'll keep smoothing over what theyve done and you'll never see it!

And no their little soft hands won't fall off if someone asks them to use a pencil 🙄
