Giving two references for a new role of lead practitioner / Assistant Head type level. One must be my current headteacher - no problem. I've been in my current school a long time and the headteacher of my previous school has moved on so they are no longer an option.

Who would you choose from the following for the second referee?

Option A: current Deputy Head of a neighbouring school, previously colleague at current school, worked closely with me for four years and can comment on my performance up to their departure two years ago.
Option B: current Head of Dept, new in role this September.

Both would be happy to give a positive reference. I'm in secondary if it makes a difference.

I'd opt for option A, but also let them know that option B is available if they wish to seek additional references. That covers all bases in case they wonder why not current HOD.
