I started at a new school in September and I hate it. I'm utterly miserable, it's not a good fit for me at all.

I've come across an SLT position at a local school that I'd like to apply for. Ive been trying to step up to Senior Leadership for a while but it's been a struggle so I'm. It under any illusion that I'll waltz straight into this job but I feel I owe it to myself to try.

Does it look terrible to a prospective school if I'm applying for a new position so soon? Can I just be honest with the head and say it's not the right fit for me so I'm exploring alternative opportunities? Or do I need to stick it out at the current place for a couple of years? Any advice would be much appreciated.

You look after yourself, no one else will. If you are unhappy it is perfectly fine to look for another job, and if you are offered it then you work your notice and go.
Don't do a job for a couple of years if you don't like it, that's a long time.

It's a sign of courage and conviction to identify a situation isn't right and to do something about it. If your CV is patchy with lots of moving around then it might be a worry for a prospective school, but if you've got long stretches at other schools then one school that's not working for you shouldn't make a difference.
