0.5 contract (second half of the week)

I asked for 3 days and have been given 2.5 - Wednesday afternoon onwards.

I just wondered where I might stand, bearing in mind that Wednesday is the day of our professional development meeting, which I am required to attend every week. This meeting runs until 5pm and I am required to arrive for my afternoon teaching at 11:30am.

This is obviously more than half a normal day. Am I reasonable to make a fuss about this?

You need to ask for your directed time timetable which should only be half that of a full time teacher.

It may be that you will only need to attend half of the meetings, or if they want you to attend all meetings, then you can arrange not to attend INSET days etc.

If you're on a 0.5 contract then you'll do 0.5 of directed time, which includes meetings. Your school should be able to show how your hours work.
Having a meeting every Wednesday isn't a problem if you're under 0.5 hours for the year.

Make sure you confirm this before starting - I've been expected to work all the directed time (meeting Mon and Wed) as I work those 3 days - even though other part timers avoid the Monday meeting - apparently you have to work them if you work those days

And my union would not step in..

No,, you can be directed to attend a meeting (or parents evening) on a day that you work but you cannot be required to go over your directed time budget to do so.

Is your afternoon the same length as the morning? I used to be paid more than 0.5 for working 5 mornings as the morning was longer than the afternoon. It was worked out to the minute - I felt pedantic but it added up to a lot of money over a year.
