What is your school’s policy on sickness due to migraine?

DS(10) has had what appears to be a migraine tonight - headache followed by single episode of vomiting. Full recovery after about an hour of rest. Has happened a few times in recent months - he’s recently got glasses but he hadn’t been wearing them today.

Last time I kept him off school for 48hrs but he is then missing 2 days off school each time this happens, when he is 100% fine in himself.

What is your school’s policy on attendance after vomiting caused by suspected migraine? Is it the standard stay home for 48hrs because you can’t be sure it’s not a bug, or are children allowed to attend?

Talk to the school, they may be happy with your explanation as to the cause of the vomiting, or they may require medical evidence of the migraines. Are you sure there’s nothing more sinister going on to be causing the headaches and vomiting?

Thanks for your reply - hopefully nothing too sinister, just seems very typical of migraine. Pretty certain it's down to him not wearing his glasses for gaming (again). He needs reminding a lot! And possibly a follow up eye test.

I'll speak to school, just a bit worried if I mention vomit they won't want him in, even though he's ok. And I do understand, especially at the moment with Covid & the fact it can present differently in kids that they have every right to be cautious. Was just curious if other schools had specific policies.

Sorry if I've posted in the wrong place - wasn't Ute where else to put it!

My daughter is 9 and has started to have the occasional migraine (headache and vomiting but over in an hour or two). I send her in the next day, and it’s never been questioned. No need for 48 hours. I would just let the school know, it’s clearly not contagious.

It’s sad to see them suffer so young isn’t it :(
