Applying for HOD jobs after career break?

Just that really, had a 5ish year career break with my kids and did an MA (related to the subject I teach). Was a head of department for over a decade and just seen a lovely HOD job in a great school. Not sure if I'm up to going back full time as HOD to be honest, but these jobs don't come up often. Not even sure I'll be short listed because of the career break and they'll have lots of young enthusiastic things applying ... but also don't want to miss out! Some schools might even appreciate some experience....?

Any thought much appreciated!

You've nothing to lose by applying. There are plenty of schools out there that value experience. Even if you didn't get it the interview practice would be useful if you're looking to get back into work. I'd say apply and see what happens.

Anyone reading this for any similar advice - go for it! I applied, got shortlisted - then got the job. Not an eyebrow was raised about my career break. It’s easy to loose confidence after having kids and overthinking things.
