I applied for a job 4 weeks ago and haven’t heard anything. Should I assume I’ve been unsuccessful and move onto new applications

Yes I would say so. I’ve always found out about teaching jobs on the day or the following day or two. You could call/email for feedback if you like but I wouldn’t leave it so long next time.

I’m a PGCE student so I have no idea I’ve never applied for a job as an nqt before so I figured with the pandemic it could’ve caused the delay.

Were you called for interview or just at the application stage? If it's just the application stage, check the advert and the closing date. The sift will not be carried out until after the closing date so if you applied early you might have a long wait! If you have been interviewed and it is 4 weeks later I would assume you were unsuccessful but it is rather rude not to let you know!

Get your mentor to check your supporting statement.
In your next application write “If I appointed at X I would ....” make it really personal to the school and their selection criteria.
I rang up on one occasion when I hadn’t been shortlisted & the next day they offered me an interview too. Maybe an email to follow up if it is a school you feel particularly keen on working at? Good Luck
