Struggling to get a teaching job

Anyone else? I was HOD and want to step down. All posts seem to be NQTs welcome and ‘this post would suit an NQT.’ Feeling a bit despondent.

I am in exactly the same position of HoD wanting to step down. But I teach a minority subject and there has been a grand total of 1 appropriate job to apply for....only thing I would say is it's still pretty early in teacher recruitment, there are still resignation dates ahead. I read a tes article recently saying that it expected recruitment to be delayed this year due to the circumstances, with a possible glut of jobs in the summer. Dont lose heart this early in the cycle!

Thanks, that’s reassuring!

I'll try and find it. Do you teach a core subject?

I am a HOD who is stepping down but staying at my school. Is that something that would work in your school? Or do you want to get out!

I stepped down from HoD two years ago, I wanted to go part time and be in a bigger dept. It took a good few interviews to find another job, BUT I managed it eventually (and was formally offered it on the resignation date for my previous job, I did cut it all a bit fine Grin) the move was massive for me; tiny independent to massive secondary school and combined with COVID disruption Shock Shock meant that it’s been crazy. However the best thing I ever did. Have been promoted to a pastoral role which I’ve always wanted but not been able to do previously and am very happy. I also like the fact i no longer am in charge of exam results for my subject!

Also they paid me UPS 1 even though I’d never officially gone through threshold to recognise my experience in the private sector.

I'm really struggling to find a job too. I've got plenty of experience including Pastoral and Academic Middle Leadership. I've been applying for jobs since last year and I'm getting nowhere. It's so demoralising, I'm really not sure what to do Sad

What kind of thing are you applying for Heifferr? What do you think could he standing in your way?

Heiferr · 09/02/2021 12:36

I have no idea @Ploughingthrough I'm at at a loss. I've been teaching for 13 years, I've never struggled to get a job before. I know there's a pandemic etc but there are jobs and people are getting hired, just not me Sad

I've applied for all sorts. Things I'm over, under or exactly qualified for and still nothing. 1 interview in the past year so even getting shortlisted is a problem. I'm on the verge of giving up but I don't know what else I would do with my life, I still love the job.

It is demoralising isnt it, but remember that teachers are needed and you will be wanted somewhere. I think those people getting employed over you are NQT or RQT, very much cheaper than you probably which seems to be an unfortunate reality for anyone over about 30 in teaching.
I was advised to look for academy trusts, or individual schools, that have a religious backing like a Catholic education trust or something. They sometimes have a bit more money floating about and can afford an experienced teacher. Or perhaps look private?
