What do middle-aged primary PE teachers wear?

Previously our PE was taken on by specialists during our PPA time but from next term we are doing it ourselves. I feel pretty confident in the scheme we have but don't know what to wear. I am one of the older (fatter) teachers and the younger ones wear dark running leggings and sporty t-shirts and hoodies. I am size 14 (pre-Christmas) and 46. As I will have to wear PE kit for 2 whole days each week - does anyone have any suggestions? I don't really want to wear leggings as I will be teaching in class and can anticipate much year 6 sniggering as I squeeze between the rows of desks. Thank you.

Thinking about it, at work our older PE teachers and even some of the younger ones wear tracksuit bottoms generally

Jersey joggers from Next, t shirt and an unbranded hoodie.

Thank you so much! The Nike trousers look so much better than leggings and I really like the longer at the back hoodie. I will get online shopping - these are some brilliant ideas.

As one of the older and fatter (size 14/16) teachers around, I teach PE for two classes on two days. I wear joggers and a tshirt, possibly a hoody. During the last few weeks, I've also added some stylish waterproof trousers and some bright yellow wellies on occasion. We switched from PE to "go and play in the woods, build a snowman, have a snowball fight...just move". We've also played rounders in the snow. Anything to keep them busy when the temperature is below 0 and we have to be out for 2 hours. (We are banned from the sportshall and I don't really want to take them into our dance studio. I teach 6-year-olds. The large wall with floor to ceiling mirrors would be much more exciting than anything I have to say.)
Just wear something you feel comfy in. Once it gets a little bit warmer again, I'll switch back to my comfy under armour yoga pants.

We have to be outside for 2 hours a week too due to covid. We just have a playground - too muddy to use the grass. Roll on Spring - PE is my toughest part of the week so I really appreciate the clothes advice.

I would suggest some thermals underneath whatever you are wearing. I also quite like my rugby stadium pants:

(I've got the women's version but they are currently too tight. I'm working on that.)

We don't have any PE planning I have to follow (I'm supposed to be teaching gymnastic at this point in the year), so we've done different things:

  • gone for a walk...a long one, involving snow
  • created a challenge trail in the woods
  • learnt different playground games
  • rope skipping
  • den building
  • made a marble run out of natural materials
  • rounders

We can't use our playground because the secondary school use it for their breaktime when we are on PE. We do have two large sports fields but they are rather exposed and it's been freezing cold and windy. The secondary school also tend to be on the one with the artificial grass. Not great.

I'm older and fatter than you (not that it's top trumps) and i wear a long half zip hoodie with trackies (or M and S jersey trousers) or sports trousers. I teach 5/6 and no-one has laughed. Not my style at all but it's a job.

pinkizzy · 28/12/2020 22:55

I was in exactly your position in Sept, down to not wanting to wear the sport leggings! I got some nice plain zip up hoodies from Matalan and some jersey joggers from ASICS along with plain trainers. Also long t-shirts from H and M. Honestly I now love PE days... So comfy!

Never gave it a thought - and I'm size 16, and was primary PE coordinator in my 50s, until I retired.

Trackie bottoms,T-shirt & fleece in the winter.
Shorts & T-shirt in the summer.
Pretty much what I wear now, in my 60s and retired.Smile

Oh - and a bathing costume when we went swimming - to which I once overheard the comment, "She doesn't look too bad."!! Grin

Landsend starfish thick Jersey joggers and long hoodies- men's ones- with long t shirts under that cover my arse!
