Catholic RE come and see

So it’s my first time in a Catholic school and ngl I’m really not impressed with Come and See. The resources aren’t great eg couldn’t hear baptism video as baby was hysterically crying. The suggested activity is always just write a prayer, think my Y2 would revolt if I made them do it every week! Does anyone have good recommendations of other websites or activities for Catholic RE?? I’ve got good subject knowledge of Christianity not so much specifically Catholic.
Also in the entire year we are doing 2 hours of Judaism and that’s it for non Catholic faiths!

We use 'The Way, the Truth and the Light'. It's ok as a starting point but we tend to make our own powerpoints, find better videos and adapt the activities. Your Diocese website may offer some support and NATRE/RE Today is good.

We were also sent on a Creative RE course with Lat Blaylock from RE Today, which was absolutely brilliant and gave us lots of ideas. I like the videos from BBC Class Clips www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/subjects/zxnygk7 but will often just google e.g. Catholic Baptism KS2 and see what videos appear.

Not a catholic or in a catholic school, but surely you basically have to follow the National Curriculm for RE? Which I think includes more than two hours of non-Christian (never mind Catholic) faiths at that stage?

IBlametheTeachers · 10/10/2020 13:43

No, Catholic schools follow their own curriculum set by the Diocese, but it does include studying other faiths.

Yellowmellow2 · 10/10/2020 14:06

As PP said, Catholic schools have their own RE curriculum. The Way, The Truth and The Life is much better than Come and See.

Augustbreeze · 10/10/2020 15:13

Ah OK, I live and learn!

Subordinateclause · 10/10/2020 16:25

@Augustbreeze There is no national curriculum for RE, it's set by LAs.

Augustbreeze · 10/10/2020 17:10

Oh! There used to be though?!

noideaatallreally · 10/10/2020 22:08

No, I don;t think so. RE has always been set by the LEA and the SACRE.

Augustbreeze · 10/10/2020 22:12

There definitely was when I trained (Stone Age or thereabouts).

But yes having googled, of course I knew it was moved to LAs, apologies.

RS is different from other subjects. It was never part of the national curriculum because prior to the NC being introduced it was already a legal requirement for schools to teach it since 1944. Other subjects did not become compulsory until the NC was introduced.

Come and See is what used to be Here I Am, isn't it? Doesn't sound like it has got much better.

Our local schools use God Matters, which seems to have a few more interesting activities than just write a prayer.

Might be worth asking other teachers in school if you haven't already. I've never heard anyone with a good word to say about it so they might already be supplementing with resources from elsewhere.
