You are most welcome to this school staff support thread to get us through stressful times. It is meant for school staff. Baiters and bashers can jog on somewhere else.

If you are NOT staff and just have a general education query please start your own thread.

You can play here only if you are a member of one the following groups-

-ABBA - anti bashers and baiting association
-SWAB - school workers against bashers
-SWOT - school workers opposing teacherbashers
-STARS - schoolworkers together against ranting + slurs

Other requirements for staff room entry include the ability to find the staff room, the ability to find a clean mug in the staff room, knowledge of the photocopier codes, and the ability to sniff out where the toffee vodka is hidden.

If you are fed up with cakes and biscuits there is now a cheeseboard on offer

If you come with a stick to beat us with then please do so elsewhere and not in the staffroom

I wish there was better transition between primary and secondary. I sent the English and maths departments copies of their last writing and maths sats along with my skills checklists for moderation so they could see where the kids were. I usually do this anyway. I don't know if they get looked at or put in a bin but I keep doing it.

I think the biggest reason for fallback in year 7 is a combination of not having that 1 teacher who knows you. Plus, we do an hour and 20 of maths and english every day. I really think that if they could keep that up somehow in ks3, or at least do 1 more lesson a week, you'd get much better maths outcomes. For example, my son needs to do a bit of mental arithmetic and 4 operations every day. In year 6 he got a good sats score, now he's behind in year 8/9. He just needs to do it every day. I realise there's not enough timetable room though. For me, I wish he could drop art and music, which he is frankly appalling at, and do extra maths. In my secondary days I taught extra English classes for wobblers - are you still allowed to do that?

I really think you'd get a lot more kids getting the magic pass. It's so disabling for them not getting maths. It worries me.

phlebasconsidered · 19/08/2020 18:01

We have to keep all papers for a set time. The kids do look at them and get feedback though. We can use them in moderation if necessary or to dispute marks.It's a pain - takes up half my cupboard!

MrsHamlet · 19/08/2020 18:05

We do have intervention for the wobblers - taught by whichever LSA has a free period. Which is fine but no one really has ownership of it.
We used to keep copies of all the mocks but now we just give them back.

Has everyone voted on this? Currently the 'yes' vote is winning (ie do you trust the government to open schools safely).

noblegiraffe · 19/08/2020 18:10

piggy what could they do with that stuff though? They can’t appeal CAGs.

Hercwasonaroll · 19/08/2020 18:10

Piggy where did that list come from?

I really think the only appeal now should be for errors in administration.

Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2020 18:11

I think it is just a control thing noble!

MrsHamlet · 19/08/2020 18:11

I reckon they'll try to claim that the meanie teachers were mean to them and look here is the evidence to prove it

Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2020 18:12

herc it is on a FB group who are campaigning against unfair CAGs , bias and the system that forced us passive and biddable teachers to grade their children down.

MrsHamlet · 19/08/2020 18:13

Hang on - are we militant, work shy and lefty, or passive and biddable? I've lost track.
I also didn't agree with some of the CAGs awarded in my name. Shhhh.

Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2020 18:14

I can't monkey : the Express keeps freezing my laptop!

It's a conspiracy, I tell you!!!

Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2020 18:17

Done it! No and don't know does add up to 58%!

WhenSheWasBad · 19/08/2020 18:19

Thanks MrsH I’ll email my mentor tomorrow. I’m hoping it’s a cock up.

Keeping mocks for a set time sounds like a storage nightmare.

MrsHamlet · 19/08/2020 18:20

Done

WhyNotMe40 · 19/08/2020 18:22

@Piggywaspushed

watch out for this:

*These are the documents I have asked for. Address the email/letter to the Centre Head and the Exams Officer, and head it Subject Access Request.:

  1. Centre Assessed Grades;
  2. Rank Order Placement;
  3. Teacher’s assessments;
  4. Any written comments on the above, including any written instructions issued to teachers in respect of determining grades;
  5. A record of my past academic performance, including, but not limited to records which records all forms of assessments, including homework marks;
  6. The results of any progress assessment, whether computerised or written.
If you have retained mock scripts for Years 12 and 13, please disclose these so that they can be checked against the exam boards marking scheme to ensure the correct grades were awarded as per the exam boards marking criteria. If there is an issue with this, please confirm you will retain these scripts until advised they are no longer required. If you no longer have exam scripts, please confirm and state why these are no longer retained.*
Oh FFS. How many woman-hours will that eat up?
Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2020 18:24

This algorithm was entirely bonkers wasn't it?

noblegiraffe · 19/08/2020 18:28

Yeah I have heard of some foundation kids being given a 6, which is what they get for not putting tier of entry on the CAGs.

noblegiraffe · 19/08/2020 18:29

I mean we were specifically told that we couldn’t predict higher than tier of entry would allow, but no one told the algorithm.

Iamnotthe1 · 19/08/2020 18:33

@monkeytennis97

Still, a 42% No vote is quite significant in the Express!

MrsHerculePoirot · 19/08/2020 18:33

@WhenSheWasBad

So I’ve finally got my timetable.

I’m not best pleased. Most regular teachers have 22 lessons (school has 25 1 hour lessons). Due to my NQT status I have 21 lessons.

I’m sure that’s not right. Not sure if I should bring it up with my mentor or not.

You should have 20.25 out of 25 lessons so only 20 (90% full time teacher allocation).
Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2020 18:34

That's beyond mad.

And yet my Higher Tier DS may also get a 6 (or God knows what on his algorithm) and will be entirely more capable.

Madness.

GravityFalls · 19/08/2020 18:35

I’m assuming that if my college received that they’d say that the data routinely released to parents already comprises a record of last academic performance - we have no set formal system to record homework/class marks as we’re free to keep our own records. And we give mocks back too.

Just voted-my goodness, can’t believe the number of yes!

I wouldn’t trust that shitshow to run me a bath.

monkeytennis97 · 19/08/2020 18:37

Totally agree @Appuskidu

TheHoneyBadger · 19/08/2020 18:39

Thanks frifri I’ll try again tomorrow though I’d be very surprised if timetables have made it onto Go. Sims is baffling to me, I’ve never used it and this school only uses it for calling for patrol and the first appearance of time tables. I go onto it and feel like I’ve traveled back in time to a 90’s software world.

WhenShe definitely chase that. By my reckoning you should have 18 max.
