New school wanting us to go in

Starting new job in September. School has asked all new recruits to go in for I assume training and planning starting from tomorrow till July. Not going on payroll till September and won’t be getting paid for these days attending. Would you go in? Under normal circumstances I wouldn’t have questioned it but I feel right now when government advising not to go out and not mix it’s ridiculous and selfish of the school to ask this especially seeing I will have to travel by public transport to get there.

I don’t see why they can’t have the training etc. Online and do it virtually instead of us all being in a room together. What’s your opinions?

In normal circumstances I don't think it would be unreasonable of them to ask if you could go in (but not demand it) but at the moment there is no way they should be asking you.

donquixotedelamancha · 26/03/2020 14:28

In fact, I would seriously consider not going in and then at the same time telling them to stuff their job.

I wouldn't throw away a job (not all subjects and regions are easy to get jobs in) but I'd certainly be looking as soon as possible.

You would be crazy to ignore the governement's advice in order to work for free. Your reply needs to make clear that this 'training' is in contravention of the government's clear direction.

Make sure you have joined a union.

SansaSnark · 26/03/2020 16:23

Don't go in, and contact your union.

I understand how tricky it is- I'll probably be without a job in September as I'm on a one year contract which finishes in August. But they are seriously taking the piss with this.

reefedsail · 26/03/2020 17:06

They are insane!

We are all desperately trying to make sure as few people as humanly possible go into our OWN school at the moment. No way in hell is anyone going in to run training for a new pool of germs, sorry, people.

We'd banned visitors well before the school closed too.

Do you think this is going to be a good school to work for?

Surely not for four months' free labour?

FlamingoAndJohn · 26/03/2020 20:25

No way.
What would they be wanting you to do if the schools were still open? They are taking the piss big time.

Pud2 · 28/03/2020 18:28

Everyday between now and July for training and planning?! That is absolutely insane on so many levels. Four months?! Yes, you should be paid but the bottom line is it’s unsafe. They are asking you to risk your health and the health of others, and go against a government directive. It’s an absolute no. If they insist then I really would consider resigning As it’s an indication of what’s to come. . Very poor leadership. It’s still early in the year and you’ll get another job.

SionnachRua · 29/03/2020 20:09

I'd be suspicious that they want free labour for this rota system UK schools are operating. Massive red flags here - I would be glad in a way that they've done this, shows a lot about the character of management.

BackforGood · 29/03/2020 20:58
  1. Not go in at all, as per Gvmnt Guidelines.

Are you moving schools or are you an NQT ?

Alkaloise · 01/04/2020 07:11

I'd be surprised if their insurance covered you if you were on premises every day for the foreseeable, but not on their payroll. The occasional visit, yes, but regular contact? If anything happened to you during that time (slipped on a freshly-polised floor, ceiling tile coming loose etc.) I doubt they'd pay out. Do not go in.

cansu · 01/04/2020 11:02

Maybe send a carefully worded reply that as the country is in lockdown it wouldn't be appropriate to
travel on public transport
work alongside others in a non essential category

Ask them to send any induction materials for you to read at home. Happy to get up to speed remotely at home blah blah blah

They are piss takers and this does not bode well.
