Help with planning when to hand in notice please

I'd be really grateful if anyone could help me out. Bit complicated, I'll try to explain as clearly as possible.

I want to finish my job teaching at A level in an FE college. This is my first, and will be my only job in FE.

Now, I don't trust this employer not to try to screw me over on my unused holiday. We have annual leave allocation and have to book off leave during half term etc. otherwise have to come into work. This is different to school.

Any unused leave is meant to be paid to you as salary when you leave. I have nearly 7 weeks holiday left at present, some of this will be used at Easter and May half term, but will be coming in a bit during those weeks. I want to finish working there in July and never come back & I am on a 3 month notice period.

Should I:

a) book in my AL over the summer and hand in my notice later (e.g. end of May/beginning of June) so that I don't come back in September and effectively finish in July?

b) hand in my notice earlier (e.g. beginning of April) and trust that they won't screw me on the AL?

Am I answering my own question here?! Fyi this employer plays hard-ball and will always try to screw you if they can. This has been an awful job, everybody wants to leave.

What would you do?
