Can I be a TA at one school and tutor kids from another without having to inform anyone?

I would be grateful for your usual words of wisdom here.

I started as a TA at school A last year. First year as a TA.

I started tutoring a child from school B last Easter. At my home, in the evenings. As it is nothing to do with school A, it never crossed my mind I would have to inform the SLT - or even ask their permission.

A TA thread on Facebook has suddenly got me wondering: some people are not allowed to tutor kids from their school (I get that). Some are not allowed to tutor at all.

I need to dig out my contract don't I...

Check your contract if you want, but you should be able to do what you like. It's not North Korea! Lots of TAs I know work two jobs because it's minimum wage and not full-time, I don't see how this is any different?

Even if it does say something in your contract, I'd be questioning the legality of that, they don't own you, or your time when you're not working for them.

It’s fine, I do it!

You do not need to inform anyone. Of course you can do this!

MsTSwift · 16/09/2019 06:58

Amazed you even thought an issue?

I work in two schools both part time. The contract for one of the schools says you have to advise them if you have another job.

Thanks all.

I would never have thought this was an issue if I had not seen a conversation on another thread about this - fears laid to rest, thanks again.

In some local authorities in Scotland, teachers must inform their employer if they take on a second job. So it is a ‘thing’ for some jobs. I would check your contract just to be sure.

I'm a TA and my contract says I have to inform the school if I have another job. I tutor through a company and informed the school when I started.
