Has anyone taught in a school in UAE?

Just that really - I’ve seen a couple of vacancies that interest me and would be very grateful if anyone could share their experience of working there. Did you take your own children? What were/are the highs and lows? I’d be looking for a HoD or Assistant Headteacher role.

A friend of mine moved over to Qatar to teach last year with her husband and twin toddlers. Seems to be going really well for them - they are planning to come back after a few years and they’ll have a lot saved for a deposit by then

I just came on here to post something similar. I'm looking at primary posts in the UEA/Dubai and Kuwait (but open to suggestions/advice!). Im single with no dependents so I guess that makes things easier in terms of not having to consider children/spouse.

Have a look on the 'Teaching overseas' section of the TES forum. Loads of useful info on there about specific locations (though you're not allowed to name specific schools).

UAE definitely doable with small children. Big nanny culture so lots of support at home. In a senior role of course you would be doing more than just short teaching days but you are well-compensated and a good school will provide a very decent package. Driving is a bit of a nightmare so most people choose to live very close to work.

Lots of people who intend to go for a few years stay longer. Lots save really well (though it isn't what it used to be in terms of a goldmine for expats) but others live a certain lifestyle and the money doesn't go far if you're out all the time at brunches etc.

The ME is on our radar for our next move for a number of reasons, being not too far from home is one of them.

One thing to look out for - make sure the schools you're applying to will definitely cover your children's school places, as these are very expensive. Many now limit to only 2 children so if you have more this narrows your search somewhat! You also need to be sure that they will actually have a space for your child's year group.

Friends of mine have been teaching abroad for a few years now and love it compared to the stresses of uk teaching. They did a couple of years in Dubai or Qatar, forget which, and they have been in Malaysia for a couple of years now.

In addition to the TES link mentioned, try sites for TEFL teaching for school reviews. I'd recommend researching the school and country carefully and don't make assumptions about what is legal/normal compared to the UK.
