I am a grown up and I do not need a bag of plastic tat!

Support staff at my school were treated to a Unison "Stars in our Schools" lunch today. Lovely gesture. School paid for a nice buffet lunch and Unison reps brought an enormous cake and we all had an hour out of the classroom/away from the office. At the end, everyone was given a Unison "goodie bag" I foolishly thought it might contain useful things like pens and pencils but it was full of plastic tat that will sit around until it gets thrown away and ends up in landfill - little stress balls (wrapped in plastic), lanyard ( we all wear compulsory school lanyards), weird collapsible water carrier that leaks, clip on extendible key carrier (wrapped in plastic) and a pen ( useful) There were around 70 staff and I was struck by the waste of money and polluting effect of all this and felt a bit patronised. I am a grown woman. I do not need a wasteful, polluting party bag! Buffet, cake and an hour to relax was much appreciated without the tat.

Maybe you can email Unison politely with effusive thanks for the lunch, etc. and then mention that you were disappointed by the single use / unnecessary use of plastics, maybe say you feel that pens would be the most welcome gift (if they want to leave these, I suppose it's part of their marketing) as they are always useful in schools...

They could at least have included a glue stick....

ScottishG · 25/11/2018 21:58

Exactly! I would have been pathetically grateful for some biros and rubbers, and positively ecstatic if the biros had green ink!

I might be too optimistic here but I'm sure they would be grateful for feedback?

NellieBee · 25/11/2018 22:34

I'd definitely email and say they should stick to the stuff schools actually want... I'd be overjoyed with pens and glue sticks myself .Throw in a highlighter and its heaven!

Agree with others about giving feedback.

We need to stop the plastic shit.

I wondered if stars in our schools might crop up on this board! It’s strongly disliked in my school - there’s a whole ‘nomination’ process that pisses everyone off. And people find it patronising. But yes we also got random crap.

I am going to admit it.

I would have loved all of the stuff that you got, not joking, I really would have.

I have a fidget toy thing (I have ADHD and I like to use it when I get cross) but it clicks so too noisy to use at school (stress ball sounds perfect)

I was thinking of a way to keep my Bitlocker key safe but not attach it to my school ID lanyard (lanyard chain and key extender sound perfect)
