Holidays and PPA cover.

I'm a part time PPA cover teacher. Usually work all day Monday but the week school is returning from Easter is the Tuesday after the Easter Monday bank holiday. So obviously, I'm not going to be in to provide PPA on the Monday, as the school is closed.

Now, is it usual/correct to be expected, by the class teacher I normally cover on Monday morning, to come in and cover her PPA at a time when I wouldn't normally be in school and for it not to be considered overtime?

No, it's not usual to be expected to cover You could for example work for a different school on the other days.

No. If school is closed tough luck - she can't just rearrange your ppa time!

The teacher is still entitled to her ppa time though (less than she'd usually get as it's 10% of her timetabled teaching that week). So the school is supposed to organise something.

She might be entitled to it but, in reality, has anyone ever taught in a school where that has actually happened?

Of course I understand that she's entitled to her PPA but it was my understanding it's up to the head to sort out.

I've never got my PPA back if it happened to be when there was a bank holiday!!

I think, for me, it's less to do with whether or not it's overtime than being expected by the class teacher to rearrange my life and come in at a time when I am not usually at work to give her back her PPA because it's fallen on a bank holiday.

It should be up to the head really to ask if you are available on the different day & would you like to work that day.

There should not be an automatic expectation.

Alexander that's precisely what I felt was correct. I advised her to ask the head first but she seems reluctant to do so.

The onus is on the school to make sure that she gets her 10% of that working week. It should not be automatically assumed that you will do it on one of your non working days as you may well have other commitments. If you do agree to go it, you should be paid overtime.

Our school (secondary) like mpst other secondaries, if you have PPA lessons and school isnt in its just unlucky.

Plus its more stress and hassle to set cover for an hour later in the week than to teach the lesson and set the class off on something independent and get some stuff done.

Absolutely not! And it shouldn't be up to her to attempt to rearrange your working hours to benefit herself anyway.

Refer this to the Head. She is due some PPA time, but it is not your responsibility to provide it at your own expense. IF you are prepared to work an additional half day, you should be paid for it.

We've always forfeited our ppa on that day. You can't work an extra day to give this to her. Speak to head.

And this is why no one ever wants PPA on a Monday!

No no no! is she going to expect you to do this in May as well?!! Speak to the head. Under no circumstances come in unpaid to make this time up.

Is she expecting you to sort this out, not her?!
