From KS1 to KS2!

After six years of teaching in KS1, there is finally an opening in Year 3 at my school.

I taught the kids when they were in Year 1 and they are a lovely bunch and we've already spoken about things being different now as they are older etc.

Any other advice gratefully received

Go for it, great to have experience in both key stages. I taught Y3 for ages but have now been stuck in KS2 for the last 11 years in a Primary School. I'd love to move to KS1 but SLT are not keen.

I'd love some Year 3 top tips if poss

Ok- are they used to an afternoon break in ks1? If so plan your afternoons carefully as sometimes they struggle at first! Often they really like stories you might think are a bit young- I have had them spellbound by my naughty little sister for example- however I often think that this is because the pace picks up in year 3- but then I came down from year 5, so possibly had high expectations (they met them though!). Have a look at what the y 4 teacher expects as standard- dates and titles on work for example, margins- all things I was surprised they often couldn't do on arrival in ks2. In fact, make sure your expectations are appropriate- talk to the ks2 coordinator or the exiting teacher.

My school phase out afternoon play for year 2 in summer term to prepare for ks2 transition so that helps.

I agree with you about stories as they have already made a few requests that I thought were very sweet

If you are after ideas for stories - I remember my favourite year three class in absolute stitches with the Joan Aitkin stories about Arabella and her pet Raven Mortimer.

Love year three- they are still full of awe and wonder( well if the new curriculum allows ) but a bit more able and independent.

Yeah I know what you mean about the new curriculum.... Across the key stages so much of the children's writing feels so 'stiff' as they attempt to tick all the boxes
