why would a teacher be struck off from the teaching profession ?

I was talking to somebody somebody who got struck off recently and the reason they gave does not sound good enough. This person is a secondary school teacher. They didn't just fire him. What I also found out was that the union cannot support his case because they think it was a fair dismissal.
To me it says there is more if they agree with the school and they cannot take on his case. The reason why am asking is if I have to worry about my child. I could understand being fired but not struck off.

If you are struck off you are unlikely to tell people that it was a fair cop! It could be something grooming related (but I would assume that police would be involved) or it could be to do with bad practice - cheating on exams, gross incompetence, something like that.

What relationship does this person have with your child?

First thing I'd do is google them plus the school/the general area, to see if anything shows up.

Massive gross misconduct will result in a temporary ban on teaching (usually 2-5 years) this includes financial mismanagement/fraud etc

To be permanently struck off is rare and usually involves child abuse/sex offenders register.

It would have to be serious misconduct - probably safeguarding, an inappropriate relationship or being on the sex offenders register.

Distant relation to my partner. He has been struck off indefinitely. We haven't heard any mention of the police. The reason he gave I don't think you would be fired for. He has got a lawyer to contest his case. They have been teaching for about thirty years.

Something like behavioural misconduct and that the headteacher had in for him. His parents have not said much to us too. We have no knowledge of any police proceedings going on or if any have happened. I spoke to his father and he said he will never work again in the teaching profession.. The teacher said the same thing.

I've just looked at three cases - one was embezzlement, one was poor quality teaching (bit of a worry, I didn't realise you could actually be struck off for this) and the third was looking at pornography which was then shown on the screen in the classroom. With each of them they could ask for it to be reviewed after two years.

No, they don't. However, they do visit every now and then. We visit his parents a lot sometimes when he is there. I have checked all the months and his name has not showed up. The case would have been in England. We know he has not worked for at list four months. His reason where depression. He then comes to us saying he is been struck off and was in tears and had no one else to talk to.

When I was at school our head of PE was struck off. He had embezzled funds from the sports centre and also was having a relationship with a 6th form girl. He was prosecuted for the embezzlement. He ended up leaving his wife for the 6th form girl. She was younger than both his kids. As far as I know, they're still together (this was early 1990s)

Maybe he's lying and he hasn't been struck off but just can't face teaching anymore and doesn't want to admit it.

I know someone who told their Dh they'd been sacked when they hadn't because they couldn't face going into work anymore.

Yes, but who'd say they were struck off, when everyone knows that only happens for very serious offences?
