HoD languages in London private school. 70 hrs a week mostly admin. Pupils increasingly arrogant and entitled, a number of parents utterly unreasonable emailing at all hours about their precious offspring. The worst thing is how clueless colleagues are about the real world, they are just totally wrapped up in boring bullshit about syllabi, admin, responsibility points and rowing results that noone cares about. They complain how ruinous the working hours are then walk away spouting these f*ing ridiculous clichés like "onwards and upwards". Never thought I would feel this way 10 years in. Looking to resign and do sthg else this year.

That's symptomatic of really poor management if the expectations are that 70 hour working weeks and pointless bullshit admin takes priority. I moved schools in September from one like you describe and I felt I was suffocating. Now I'm in a school which feels totally different. Yes there's still loads of stuff to do, but it's so much more manageable now as the ethos is so different. And we are totally supported by SLT about difficult parents which makes such a difference. Good luck in whatever you decide to do. Smile

Poor management indeed. Sadly I've now seen versions of this in several schools so time to do sthg else. The kind of unworldliness of it all us the worst thing
