Should I do this or the ups teachers?

In our department we need to sort out a new assessment scheme. I am on M4, the rest of the department are all on ups. Is it the wrong attitude to think they should be doing this as they are paid substantially more than me? Or should I grit my teeth and think of career advancement?

Everyone has to muck in on this sort of thing.

It's pretty important to be involved with it.

I'm on m3 and currently doing my job as well as the 'paperwork' of a teacher on ups who is off sick. It doesn't feel fair, but there's no one else... So I'm inclined to say muck in!

Ummm, they're only on ups because they've been working longer than you? (Although I didn't get to ups for about five years after I could because I had other stuff going on).
If it will affect your career and salary advancement not to do it, then do it.

If you want to have a say in the assessment process the you need to contribute. If not then let the others work on it and don't complain if it does not suit you.
If you want to feel like part of the team and have evidence towards your UPS, then contribute.
As M4 you are an experienced member of staff and you could make useful contributions.
However if you really cant cope with anything else on your plate, let the others get on with it.

I'd do some of it but maybe try to negotiate less work than everyone else. I'd definitely make sure you're involved with it, or the way it's been done will annoy you down the line. Best to have you say now, and do at least some of it, because then you know some of it will be how you want it. Also, it's really useful to do at least a bit of it as a form of training, to develop yourself as a teacher.

To move onto UPS you now need evidence of contributing to the school beyond your teaching so by doing it you'll have that evidence for when you are eligible.

Forget moving to UPS, it's part of the teacher standards. Given that moving up the main payscale is no longer automatic, shirking responsibilities won't do you any favours.

As a teacher you are expected to "contribute to the design and provision of an engaging curriculum within the relevant subject area(s)."
