My lovely GCSE resit group are coming in next week for a few hours for a group revision session

Any ideas to make it more interesting / useful / memorable than rattling through past exam questions?

Thanks and Flowers

Oh I love revision time! I live in the following activities to keep things varied.

  1. exam questions posted around the room with answer to another question written at the top of the page to form at reassure hunt style activity - could dis whole paper or pick and choose questions from paper or focus on past exam questions from a particular topic.

  2. students to work through past exam questions in groups in a relay style activity, all groups get the 1st question to begin with they then come to you to check they're answers, if correct you give them the next question if wrong instant feedback and they return to group to correct working. Again could do a whole paper or just pick questions to focus on. I love this task and it works great as long as students come to you and queue nicely (can get about competitive) and also get students to swap round who comes up to explaining check answer to ensure they are all getting involved.

  3. give students completed past paper that you've done. Can include common misconceptions and make it a bit competitive with who gets closest to the actual score the paper would have received. Good to emphasise where the marks come from and importance of showing working.

Hope that helps,have fun!

That's brilliant - thanks Mrs

I hate revision time - I'm cramming a GCSE into a year and there's no real time for proper revision, hence the holiday day!

[[http://www.m4ths.com/uploads/3/2/7/4/3274186/teach_yourself_gcse_maths_in_one_day_help_sheet.pdf] might be useful.

Agree with the suggestion of a revision race.

Out of interest, how much teaching time does your resit group get?

mayfridaycomequickly · 10/04/2015 20:30

Thanks noblw will check that out when I've had less wine tomorrow.

I get 3 hours a week. 'Resit' is generous - it's college so some sat last year, some 2 years ago, some in other countries, some never...

I'm using corbettmaths a lot- there's 5 a day questions on there as well as topics.

Also tarsia puzzles (but you will have to make them up?) are useful for topics like simplifying algebra expressions and encourage group work. You can even add an extra piece/take one out.

Could you put them in pairs and ask them to prepare and give a teaching demo/questions on particular topics so they are teaching class?

Thanks prof I do use corbettmaths already.

The tarsia stuff always gets blocked at work for some reason - I'll try on my laptop tonight though

I'll definitely get them to do a student teach too - brilliant!
