How do you decide to accept a job offered?

I'm going to be looking very carefully in huge type of school I want to work in from sept. As my current place is horrendous for pressure. It got me thinking about Helen I had my interview and what warnings I could have looked out for before accepting. Maybe the fact that all the staff seemed to be very young? Or that there was lots of talk at interview of targets and levels? I wondered if I was too hasty but then, doesn't everyone accept a job when they have gone to the trouble of applying, being interviews and done an observation? I ignored my gut instinct at interview and decided to go for it..

What could I look out for next time to make sure it's a school I'm going to be happy in. ( not too pressured)

Request a visit before you apply and really get a feel for the atmosphere of the place without the pressure of interview day. Talk to the kids and talk to the staff. If somewhere isn't right then you'll likely feel it instinctively. At the very least it'll give you time to decide whether or not to apply.

For my current job I requested a visit before I applied and had a good chat with the head of department.

It's all a bit odd accepting a job on the day, isn't it, but I get why they have to do it.

A friedn recently found out how bizarre education interviews are as her new boyfriend had one, and she just couldn't get over it - the fact that you openly tell your current position you are going to interview, the way they ask for references on the day, the way it all gets decided at once. She was flabbergasted.

Definitely visit the school first. Ask about staff turnover, look for a mix of experiences. Ask if current leadership team started out as main scale teachers in the school, I think that can tell you a lot about how well a school nurtures and develops it's talent.
