It has to be 40 minutes long (time limit not imposed by an English teacher(!) and give the candidates an opportunity to stretch themselves in both their thinking and writing (these criteria were also not thought up by an English teacher) and may test either Language or Literature.
It cannot be a re-hash of a GCSE question.
