Offered a job on lower pay scale point

I've been offered a temporary job on a considerably lower scale point (was 6, they offer 2 with possible review).
While I want this job, I feel this is taking the mickey.
I don't have that much experience in the KS they wanted, and I won't be a tutor or do any clubs, but I will still go to meetings and parents' evenings. So their reason that I'm not doing a "full" teacher's job is somewhat thin.

What happens when I accept this and then apply elsewhere? Is there a legal aspect of this?

I do want the job but not desperately so. They really want me, I don't think they have anyone else that fits.

Well. I don't have a job atm and therefore I am getting a bit uneasy about gaps in my cv. Maybe the ht banks on that. But .2 is a joke. I would then need 8 years to get back to the pay scale I had.

Yes it's state, was private up to last September. Nothing since, because I can only teach one subject. But they want me. Why are they being petty over pay?

In the area I work I think the policy now is that jobs can be advertised at a certain point on the scale so if you're higher up it's expected that you would take the cut.

Was it clear in the ad what the pay was or has this come up only with the offer?

You make a really good point that I hadn't considered though about what would happen if you subsequently moved posts again. Could your scale point 6 stand or would you lose it if you accepted 2?

Yes it will affect future employment, as other schools may only offer to honour the pay scale you are on at that point.
I think I'm right in saying, though, that schools can fix their own pay scales from M1 equivalent through to M6 equivalent.

I think if you're going to state they can pay you at where you were when you last taught in state schools. I have moved between the 2 sectors several times and they have always honoured my point on the pay scale. I'd be tempted to do supply if I were you.

I accepted lower than I should have been on, in order to get a job this year. I was on ups 3 and have had to accept M6 in an academy. After 4 years out of teaching hanging children, I wasn't even getting interviews. I felt like his compromise was an acceptable way back in for me.

Not saying it's right, or okay, it's just what I had to do to get a job.

It's a catch 22 situation. If I accept, I may not get anything above that scale from September.
If I don't do it, I might not get a job at all.

I never taught in state schools before.
Funny how the ht wants me to be a tough cookie to cope with discipline, but a complete pushover when it comes to accepting almost nqt pay after 13 years of experience.

Are you in an oversubscribed subject?

In that case, I'd say you've done very well to get a job in a state school at all. However, it would still be worth asking the question re pay and whether the governors could look again and perhaps reconsider their position? I know it's difficult talking about money, especially in situations such as these.

I don't have a problem talking about money (being foreign).
I think I will compromise to start on M2 with upgrade to M3 after a 4 week period. Problem is I want it in the contract so it's watertight. Ht still might find something to not give me M3 after I've started.

How temporary is temporary? A pay rise after just 4 weeks seems rather odd really. Surely it would be linked to some kind of progress review?

Don't know if I'm ready to have ht breathe down my neck for that or if I should just do my very best and forget about the money.

Spoke to my union, the school can offer anything they like, it's an academy and they don't "do" portability.

Most schools around here are so this issue will be coming up at any school.

Well, I think I'll take the job and gather more experience and fill up my CV, to be in a stronger position in the next job interview.

That's the problem with Academies, they are a law unto themselves.
As regards what the school can ask you to do beyond straight teaching, the National Teaching Standards expect you to "Fulfil wider professional reponsibilities' regardless of what scale you are paid on and what sort of state schoool you are working in. You are lucky that they don't want you to be a tutor and still pay you on M2.
