The royal family

Ascot - all the curtsying…

For some reason my social media is showing me lots of videos of the royal family in massive hats bobbing up and down to each other at the horses

Isn’t it extremely odd to be curtsying to certain members of your family… and your cousin gets married and all of a sudden you’re curtsying to some random

And where’s all the bowing? If Sophie’s curtsying to C&C shouldn’t Edward be also? He gets the kisses but not the grovelling afterwards.

ODD!

I completely agree. Apparently it's because they are bowing to the role of King and Queen and are able to separate that from it being their close relative. Still looks bloody weird to me. I would like to think William will suggest not doing it to him when the time comes but given how much Catherine loves it I doubt she'll allow that.

EveryKneeShallBow · 17/06/2026 19:42

To be honest, curtsying isn’t the oddest thing about the monarchy.

AbsoluteHoot · 17/06/2026 19:46

It it just ridiculous? It really makes me cringe. Kate’s the worst of all of them. I’ve seen to her do it to Charles’ back, ffs. They really need to knock this bollocks on the head.

Why? Because their family tradition is ‘bollocks’ to you? Who made you the arbiter of how people choose to behave? They don’t request that people outside the family do it to them (although some ignoramuses think they do, they really don’t.) And people within the family who don’t like it are free to fuck off to California to sell jam and embarrass themselves on social media.

HelenaWilson · 17/06/2026 19:51

Is this another 'let's be spiteful about Catherine' thread? Didn't we have enough of that back when she was ill?

MrSchubertWhiskers · 17/06/2026 20:09

I don't typically follow royal stuff but a couple of clips flashed up for me too, and i saw the Royal women curtseying but not the men bowing.

Yup. This tradition is total bollocks and just serves to separate and elevate them from the people whose approval they need. They need to be relatable. Bowing and curtseying is ludicrous.

It's not a family tradition though is it? It's a royal tradition and means they publicly treat their family not like family.

We are all perfectly free to say it looks daft.

LilacDrift · 17/06/2026 20:12

The Royals should get rid of this out dated rubbish.

Couldn't resist a dig at H & M could you?

This is showing respect to the King’s
position. At school we were always expected
to stand when the teacher entered the room and to Remain standing until being told to sit. I’m not
sure if this still happens in school though.

helpfulperson · 17/06/2026 20:54

Some of the royals choose not to curtsey. Lady Louise Windsor for one rarely does. There is bowing but it is much more subtle

MrsLeonFarrell · 17/06/2026 20:57

They don't expect the public to do it, if they want to keep traditions within the family who cares?

I'm getting a lot of amusement watching clips of women in enormous hats trying to work out how to do double cheek kisses without clashing headgear.

No I don’t think I’m being spiteful about The Princess of Wales, I think she manages a tricky role whilst looking perfectly composed in killer heels.

I do however, think all the bobbing up and down is very outdated and looks a bit ridiculous…

I did get outfit envy the other day watching Catherine and Gabriella Windsor both looking lovely in the wind and trying to embrace each other with the posh equivalent of dustbin lids on their heads…

It seems to be now that they only curtsey/bow to the King/Queen. None of the HRHs get curtseys from the rest of their family. They just do hugs and kisses. Although I do remember seeing Edo bow to William and Kate at one of the carol concerts. That might be his Italian side of course.

sunsettosunrise · 18/06/2026 21:59

I agree but Catherine and Sophie signed up for this malarky when they married into this family, and it was even more archaic back when Sophie came into the fold in the 90s, 27 years ago I doubt she could get away wearing black to ascot.

elprup · 20/06/2026 06:59

I find it very funny. Honestly, look at Fergie curtsying here 🤣 I’m amazed she managed to get back up!

…and maybe knock the heads off the bollocks while they’re at it!

BemusedAmerican · 20/06/2026 08:34

Give me a break. One of your Royals residing in my country has their title announced in an empty room. That's ridiculous, not curtseying at a public event.

simpsonthecat · 20/06/2026 11:02

Crack on with bobbing and curtseying then! You wouldn't catch me doing it!

CathyorClaire · 20/06/2026 11:26

We have a current monarch who yapped on for years about 'modernising' and a monarch in waiting who's currently yapping on about 'modernising'.

One seems happy to be bobbed at and the other seems happy for his wife to do the bobbing all in front of an increasingly sceptical public.

It's jarring and anachronistic.

elprup · 20/06/2026 13:43

I just tried to do a Fergie style curtsey at home and fell on my arse! 🤣

Yes and what respect Fergie showed to the Monarchy. Grifting of the highest order, near bankruptcies time and time again so having to blag money off her mother-in-law QE2, selling access to her ex-husband for ££££££. Plus more
So good of her to show respect by curtseying though

If they want to do it in private crack on, but they ought to knock it on the head in public because it is ridiculous. Kate manages to curtsey when Charles has his back to her and doesn't even see her
