As I know next to nothing about publishing , does anyone know if H and M and/ or their lawyers will have received an advance copy?

Obviously I am talking about Tom Bowers new book !

It's being serialised in the Times at the moment, so if they did, they haven't been able to stop publication.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 16/03/2026 15:22

I don't know much about it, but surely the publishers of a) the book and b) the newspaper will have wanted a legal say in it?

Can someone explain the situation with the Japanese billionaire to me like I'm five? I'm done in from a holiday with a 2yo and can't work out what happened and what should have happened.

jeffgoldblum · 16/03/2026 15:24

@Mylovelygreendressno , as far as I can tell it’s sabre rattling to get the times to stop printing the articles , apparently they will have their lawyers look over a copy after it’s officially released.

Untailored · 16/03/2026 15:26

No, they wouldn’t.

zurigo · 16/03/2026 15:27

I wouldn't have thought so. TB is very careful to not put anything in his books that can't be independently confirmed. They didn't sue him for his last book, after all, and that was all about them. This one is about other people and other issues relating to the RF too. I'm looking forward to reading it.

NerdyBird · 16/03/2026 15:30

The publisher will have had their own legal team review the book and decide what level of risk they are happy with.

CathyorClaire · 16/03/2026 20:34

I can't see any benefit to TB or his publishers providing Henry with an advance copy so I'd be surprised if they had.

I do think knowing his penchant for litigation the publisher's lawyers will have crawled all over it several times and then some.

Mylovelygreendress · 16/03/2026 20:36

Thanks . I was just a bit surprised by the speed of their clap back !

Just a sign of the truth now ! , they only clap back when it’s too close to home.

Didn't Harry threaten to sue over Lownie's claim he punched Andrew?
And yet.

67eight · 17/03/2026 12:24

What's the title of the new book?

Yes he did! , apparently lownie said go ahead and that was the end of that!

He was also going to sue the BBC for saying that the late Queen hadn’t agreed to H and M using the name Lilibet .
The BBC refused to back down and weren’t sued !

Yes, I think Lownie was rather more careful of his sources for the Royal Family than he was for Melania Trump.
It's not a good look when a historian has 60 000 books withdrawn.

Wow!! I did not know that, I admit I’m not a lownie fan and find the blind faith in everything he does a tad odd .

zurigo · 17/03/2026 14:42

@67eight It's called Betrayal by Tom Bower. Comes out on 26 March.

bluegreygreen · 17/03/2026 14:45

I discovered it a while ago when I started looking to see what other historians were saying about his book. Several compared it unfavourably to his previous books.

Sorry @Mylovelygreendress, not meaning to derail your thread. Wrong author and book!

binkie163 · 17/03/2026 16:05

I wont read it so I will pick up the best bits here. Isnt Bower a barrister? he is well aware of what he can publish.

Mylovelygreendress · 17/03/2026 16:08

I tried to reserve the book at our local library and would have been 11th!

Bower is very careful with his sources - he won’t include anything that hasn’t been verified by at least two sources. Whereas H and M have “their truth”, which may or may not bear a glancing resemblance to objective reality.

It will be interesting to see if the blind faith in him remains once he has released his book on Prince Philip who he is an admirer of.

Yes he knows his onions, though no doubt some will try and discredit him if it doesn’t suit their own personal views. He’s no fool and wouldn’t print a book if it didn’t get past the lawyers.

British investigative journalist and biographer Tom Bower worked as a barrister early in his career before joining the BBC in 1970
. He studied law at the London School of Economics and practiced for the National Council of Civil Liberties, a background that influenced his forensic, investigative approach to journalism

  • Brief Legal Career: He is described as a "barrister turned investigative journalist" and had a "brief spell" as a practicing barrister.
  • Journalism Career: He joined the BBC in 1970, working on Panorama as a reporter and producer for 25 years.
  • Biographies: He is known for writing unauthorized biographies of high-profile figures

I'd settle for 11th.

It's not even listed at my local library as yet 😡
