One of Life's Regrets....

OzMumOf3Boys · 03/08/2025 04:06

I was such a fan of Harry and Meghan when she came on the scene! Even had a party here in Oz when they got married.
Bunting and all .....
but
I named one of my children Harry - that's my regret. Great name shame it was after someone who has become such a disappointment,
that's the whole reason for this post!

Harry is a lovely name and still very popular. Tbh I don't automatically think of the Harry when I hear it. I don't think Harry & Megan have done much wrong either. It would be far worse being named after Philip, that's a man who has brought proper shame on the family.

Ecrire · 03/08/2025 04:38

Surely you named him after Harry Potter? As an ode to an author who’s doing some good work for women and girls?

OzMumOf3Boys · 03/08/2025 06:32

He is a teenager so I do
love it and him but it did come up in conversation recently where did the name come from.

what on earth did the Duke of Edinburgh do that brought shame in his family? Served in WW2 , nearly killed in action, stood behind the Queen throughout her reign until his death, set up the Duke of Edinburgh awards…

He was very popular with the staff of the Royal residences.

27TimesAway · 03/08/2025 06:43

Literally no-one will ever think you named him after PH. Harry is hardly an out there name after all. I find it hard to imagine someone would wonder where the name came from. It's like asking 'why did you name your child Steven?' Not 'Why did you name your child Balonz'.

If it worries you though perhaps research all the very great and wonderful Harrys out there who did good things for the world.

What is it they say? Even heroes have feet of clay.

CoffeeCantata · 03/08/2025 07:55

You are doing wonderful work in rehabilitating Harry as a name! Don’t be disheartened.

It’s a classic name and there are lots of perfectly good Harrys in the world. My dad was ine!😄

No he hasn’t. He was top of his year at Dartmouth Naval college and had a brilliant career in the navy. As pps have said he started lots of educational and conservation initiatives and used his rather frustrating situation in life to try and do good.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 03/08/2025 07:59

Tell people you named him after Harold Bishop

NewAgeNewMe · 03/08/2025 08:00

I’ve not heard of Philip being a wrong’un @pushthebuttonnn

Think you may have mixed him up with Andrew.

edit: forgot to say I love the name Harry. My brother is one.

TheNightingalesStarling · 03/08/2025 08:01

Harry has been one of the most popular boys names for decades. No one associates it with PH, or Harry Potter etc.

PH is actually a Henry anyway

pushthebuttonnn · 03/08/2025 08:34

Sorry I did mean Andrew, not Philip. Apologies!!

smilesy · 03/08/2025 09:28

Harry is a great name. I might have used it for one of my DS but it didn’t quite “go” with the other names iyswim. Anyway, prince Harry’s actual name is Henry, so there’s a get out if you really feel you need one (I don’t think you do). As an aside, I know of a Harry Potter who was born a couple of years before the first book came out. Coincidences happen 🤷‍♀️

Briantheguitargod · 03/08/2025 09:31

Is there anything on mumsnet that certain fanatics don't try to shoehorn trans issues into.....🙄

flippantlydone · 03/08/2025 09:37

I agree Philip would be worse, with the racist ‘gaffes’ and his long term girlfriend, Penny. No wonder Charles and William think it’s OK to have a side piece, it’s protocol!

MagnificentBastard · 03/08/2025 09:40

I don’t think you’ll find a single person that will think you named your Harry after Prince Harry.

(Anyway, it’s hardly controversial and I don’t know what he’s done wrong to make you feel like this.)

Aaaaaarrrrgggghhh - whoops! That’s some slip of the tongue/finger.😲

Agreed about Appalling Andrew.

Why on earth are you shoehorning this into a thread that hasn’t got anything to do with that!
1 donating millions to help women has nothing to do with trans!
2 most people are going about their lives not thinking about trans!
3 long before trans was* *the subject, jk Rowling donated millions to charities to help women who are the victims of domestic violence!
this is the royal topic , that discussion can take place on other areas of mn , please let us have one area without it!

upinaballoon · 03/08/2025 14:36

Harry Potter, Harry Smith, Prince Hal i.e.King Henry V, Henry Hall, Harry Styles.

Please could you give a full example of one of his racist 'gaffes', with details of any references made by anyone before or after.
Did he ever go to Lords cricket ground to meet test match teams and refuse to shake hands with the West Indians?
Edit to ask who were Diana's pieces on the side?

I was replying to flippantly, not to someone else! I'm too lazy to look for the names.

jeffgoldblum · 03/08/2025 14:47

@OzMumOf3Boys, my advice to you , don’t think anymore about it! Harry is a nice name , nobody will even think about why you chose it , in the unlikely event someone asks, simply say you just liked the name 👍

What? She is doing wonderful work for women and girls. That's not shoehorning anything. Beira's Place is amazing.
