Interesting , albeit scathing, review of the Colombia trip

This was posted on Reddit, its in Spanish so needs to be translated, says exactly what most people have been saying of their 'tours' and this Colombia trip in particular.. This journalist nailed it.

I guess Harpers Bazaar nor People magazine will be reporting what most people REALLY thought of their trip.

https://blogs.elespectador.com/actualidad/pletora/francia-marquez-los-conoci-en-netflix/

A few notable excerpts (google translated)

During their visit, they acted as luxury tourists:

Why did Francia Márquez decide to invite the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to do "humanitarian tourism"? The answer seems unlikely, exit from Creole stand-up comedy. At a press conference, the vice president revealed her motivation: "I met Meghan and Harry through the media, but above all I watched the Netflix documentary .

Márquez, as a dazzled fan and a capricious girl, used her power as vice president to meet the media stars that moved her. It's like watching a bad gringa comedy in real life.

Harry and Meghan's visit was, in essence, a spectacle of neo-colonialism

Although the forum had quality experts and panelists, Harry and Meghan's participation contributed the same thing as their visit to the school: nothing.

the children of La Boquilla were reduced to marketing objects to enhance the public image of the dukes,

the dukes, experts in upbringing and culture, offered local parents valuable advice on how to raise their children in the midst of a reality that Harry and Meghan could hardly imagine. WTF!

The visit lasted an hour; it was a "flash", they took longer to come and go.

the dukes acted as white salvationists,

Meghan Markle attended the summit "Women of African descent and Power: Voices of Equity" in Cali, where her interventions were limited to clichés and banalities typical of a self-improvement coach.

This I found very funny...........The couple got married and as is the case in many families, Meghan disliked her husband's grandmother, her in-laws and her brother-in-law, due to her race and temperament incompatible with her brother-in-law's wife,

Without notable skills or professions, they sell their image

The reality is that the only beneficiaries were the dukes,

A very succinct review, I wonder if Harry and Meghan are listening ? Are they reading the room about how their trips are viewed ?

The journalist did, indeed, nail it.

Highly unlikely they will take this to heart they rarely do

I don't think that's an accurate translation of "raza" in this context.

It might be better translated as "background" or "community", or even "type of person" or "culture", especially given the writer's own background.

I'll read the whole thing through again later when I've got a bit of time. Thank you for the discovery though.

Nadeed · 25/08/2024 02:27

It is just a blog?

Yeah, its google translate, so it is a rudimentary literal translation.

Spanish speakers , who understand the nuances, say it is even more cutting in the original version. Interested to hear your take on it when you read it in its original language.

A quick Google suggests that El Espectador is a Colombian national newspaper.

A national newspaper. Thanks for the find op. I look forward to Abuela’s translation.

Good to put in print about their faux me me me tour and what they actually did - I'm still in awe of that dalliance she seemed to be having with the VP's husband where the VP launched herself at them and Hazza pulled MM away

To be fair, I’m not sure that’s what actually happened. If you watch carefully, it seems that Meghan swooped in with her, ahem, greeting and the VP spun round when she realised they had arrived. Harry then seems to shake the VP’s husband’s hand as Meghan moves out of the way

It does all look a bit odd though and Meghan definitely seemed to be verging on a smooch with said man from the stills shown 😂

lazybrownfox · 25/08/2024 10:09

Harry sensed it. He saw it and he intervened. It's bad when even HE is seeing this.

Onemoreterm · 25/08/2024 10:44

How much did all the security cost? Given Harry is concerned about the safety of his family in the UK it must have been very impressive security in Columbia. A ring of steel?

MummyJ12 · 25/08/2024 11:01

I posted this on another thread this morning but it’s maybe more relevant here. They know themselves that it didn’t go well and are apparently embarrassed and upset by the reaction to their Columbian shenanigans.

I guess they do a debrief after these PR events, pity the poor aide who has to try to sugar-coat the feedback.

I really hope they listen to the fact they've embarrassed themselves - spending money like water where it needs to reach the people, not their vanity 'look at me' faux royal tour - disgusting people that they are

Jeezitneverends · 25/08/2024 12:21

The article also talks about how isolated Harry feels and how he thought he would be celebrating his upcoming milestone birthday with friends and family. Seriously? How unaware is he? You can't find racism accusations at people demand apologies and expect people to forget about it when you are ready to move on. So immature

That is true. But go to the home page for the link. It is a blog site. The link is simply to a blog.

Nadeed · 25/08/2024 13:15

This is the actual national newspaper.
https://www.elespectador.com/

Ele Spectacodor means the observer. Someone has just used that phrase as their blog.
I could create a blog titling it The Times, but it does not mean my views hold any weight.

On the link you posted type Meghan in search and you get the article. The only weight im seeing is heavy lifting that is required to view Colombia as a success

Click on the OPINION link on the newspaper left hand side menu, it brings up another menu, the article is under BLOGS on the opinion menu on the newspapers website.

You absolutely could do that !!, but someone else could be writing a Blog for the real The Times newspaper, doesn't take a genius to know which one carries more weight and credibility..

Thanks. So it is a blog under the auspices of the newspaper. Just like the blogs that MN used to host. It is one persons view. Without reading wider Spanish news you have no idea if this is a widely held view, or a clickbait opinion piece written to be controversial.
Read it, but I do not think it holds any more weight than another MN poster on here.
