If social media around when Diana died…

Would the Queen have released statements/apologies on Twitter/X? She’d have been nudging 70 then…

Is ‘never apologise never explain even ’ possible today? If K had kept to her/KP’s boundary of ‘nothing before Easter’ would that have made life easier all round? It might be the only way the whole circus is survivable. That and a rhino hide.

I've thought about this before. I think life for everyone involved would have been unbearable and the internet might actually have broken!

The conspiracy theorists were bad enough as it was.

WandaWonder · 12/03/2024 08:50

There would be more conspiracies than there are people on the planet divided by the brain cells people use to come up with them

RancidOldHag · 12/03/2024 08:57

I don't think there would have been any difference to the official statements issued, nor the timings.

There would however have been mountains of "just do this one thing to show us you care" posts.

And the voices saying "hang on, they're with the boys who need comfort and support in private before the onslaught" would all be drowned out

The memorial compost heap (sorry, flower carpet) would have happened anyhow - though I suspect it would have been smaller - nowadays action online seems to have displaced getting up and doing something

CabinetofMonstrosities · 12/03/2024 08:58

I think it is ‘Never complain, never explain’

User14March · 12/03/2024 09:19

@CabinetofMonstrosities indeed, ‘even’ meant to stand afterwards.

I think Diana would have been trending on Twiiter every other day when she was alive and a lot of it would have been really nasty.

I don't think the RF make announcements now on social media so no I don't think that would have happened.

The grief tourists and nutters would both have been out in force on SM.

BenefitWaffle · 12/03/2024 13:07

The Royal Family would have had an even harder time. A surprisingly large proportion of people believe Diana was murdered. I read the research when I had to do a report about conspiracy theories and I think it was about a quarter of the population.

Social media in its worst manifestations is terrifying. It's having a really frightening effect on our world - and I'm not exaggerating.

Can't help but sound elitist here, but it's giving an equal voice to some of the most stupid, ignorant, nihilistic and vicious people in society. A generation ago you had to have achieved something in life in order to have your voice heard, but now any racist, misogynist, misanthropic idiot can shout their rubbish and be heard. Conspiracy theories, character assassinations, horrendous misogyny, cruelty and spite...and people read it and believe it. It really depresses me, and the only SM I do is occasional MN.

It think it's partly why we have the politicians we have - both here and in the USA. We are getting the governments we deserve.

The stuff about the harmless Mother's Day pic from the Waleses has been utterly bonkers.

It’s also a great democratising tool for activism for social justice and climate crisis.
