The royal family
Fraudornot · 08/03/2024 20:07

I thought that - genuinely a happily married couple. But they were both quite emotional and I did wonder if Edward had been ill as he lost so much weight in the last 12 months.

Wishimaywishimight · 08/03/2024 20:15

It was so sweet to see them both so emotional and the hug afterwards was lovely - they seem very happy together.

upinaballoon · 08/03/2024 20:16

Yes, OP, lovely little speech.

WinnieTheW0rm · 08/03/2024 20:19

Wonder if they'll be doing the Otley Run whilst in Headingly?

It's strange to remember the days when Sophie was utterly reviled as unsuitable for Royal life (fake sheikh and other dodgy access deals).

Fraudornot · 08/03/2024 21:11

@WinnieTheW0rm yes I can remember all the negativity of her marrying Edward but they have quietly got on with it and seem to have been very close to the queen and Prince Philip. I think Edward has had some sort of health scare recently though

Lifebeganat50 · 08/03/2024 21:21

That’s lovely, she’s one of my favourite royals

FlatWhiteLover · 09/03/2024 08:34

I remember their wedding, my DD was three weeks old at the time and that was nearly 25 years ago. Great to see they are still very happy.

Shame the Queen and Philip are no longer alive to see their silver through, especially given Anne, Charles and Andrew's marriages crumbled after only a few years of married life.

Mylovelygreendress · 09/03/2024 08:56

A lovely tribute to a lovely man . And they seem to be raising well- balanced children . I have seen Louise with friends in St Andrews a couple of times and she looks happy and relaxed . Great to see.

JSMill · 09/03/2024 09:25

That's lovely. I remember when Sophie did her D of E bike ride a few years ago and her family met her at BP. They were all hugging and seemed like a really close and happy family.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 09/03/2024 12:56

I think it’s lovely that Edward doesn’t mind showing emotion in public. I remember his clear emotion when he spoke after Louise was born, and then again at the funerals of his parents.

We’ll never see a royal weep in public, but it is nice that’s he’s comfortable enough in himself that he doesn’t force himself to shut down to get through events. It’s very human.

Edited

Anne's second marriage was over 30 years ago,1992,and next year Charles and Camilla will have been married for 20 years, maybe it's lucky second time round for the Royal Family. Wonder Andrew and Sarah will join the second time arounders?

jeffgoldblum · 09/03/2024 13:28

Lovely to see ! Nice thread 👍

catwithflowers · 09/03/2024 14:07

That was a beautiful and simple speech. I'm happy for them that they still seem very much in love.

MrsLeonFarrell · 09/03/2024 15:00

They seem like a lovely couple and I wish the work they do got more publicity, Sophie in particular does a lot for unglamorous causes around the world.

I have heard Anne and Tim have lived separate lives for years now but maybe that is idle gossip.

I believe Philip put the kybosh on Andrew and Fergie remarrying. At any rate they have been living like a glorified married couple for many, many years, not sure if it is worth changing the arrangement now even with Philip gone?

I think they will remarry. I am an utter cynic when it comes to those two, but by remarrying two things can happen when she dies they won’t otherwise.

They can be buried/interred together at Frogmore.

mostly though I think they will as then her will can be sealed like other royal wills so no one will know any real detail on properties or finances etc

I find Sophie & Edward pretty easy to warm to. I remember the now DofE being interviewed when Megxit was at its peak & he said something like "That's families for you" with a mild chuckle. He was really quite relatable.

He was here in Australia last year promoting the DofE awards and his visit was very well received. All low key, he flew commercial & was seen carrying his own bag (I know! Amazing!) The people at all his events seem to genuinely enjoy him.

I do wonder if their kids will be dragged into Royal Duties in a few years' time, but I sort of doubt it. Would rather think they'll be largely left alone to pursue their own interests, a bit like Peter & Zara Phillips were.

Uricon2 · 10/03/2024 18:13

Lovely speech. Both of them have totally managed to overcome the issues of the (long ago) past and are an invaluable asset to the RF now, I really wish they were more appreciated.

Dustyblue · 11/03/2024 06:45

Sophie & Edwards past 'indiscretions' were pretty mild on the grand scheme of things.

For example, people continue to deride Prince Edward's efforts in producing "It's A Royal Knockout". I know, I know- he had an epic hissy fit with the journalists afterwards, but personally I thought the whole thing was brilliant.

The 1st time I watched I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Is that John Cleese throwing hams at Barry Manilow? Is that Fergie screaming at Meat Loaf? Cliff Richard running around dressed as a leek? It just kept on going, bless him.

Sophie seems delightful, and like a very genuine and engaging person. Also she's beautifully dressed and looks fabulous. The Slimmed Down Monarchy will surely have them at the forefront more.

Dustyblue · 11/03/2024 06:47

Oops, was also thinking that even though Louise & James are titled, whereas Peter & Zara Phillips aren't, they'll still hopefully be able to pursue their lives in a similar fashion.
