Which members of the royals would/do your dc recognise?

Took ds (10) and dd (13) to the dentist this week. We got there a bit early so i picked up a copy of Hello magazine and was chatting to ds about the people in the photos whilst waiting.

My ds did recognise Queen Elizabeth, but had no clue who any of the others were.

William - "is he a famous wrestler"
Kate - "does she work in fashion?"
Camilla - "i dunno"
Charles - "he looks like he used to play football, maybe, was he a famous footballer who won the world cup? "

But it made me think, does my ds just live in a bubble or do most kids nowadays just not have the RF on their radar?

My young adult kids would recognise the main ones I think but they don’t care about the royals. They spent the day of the queen's funeral gaming with their mates because everything was shut, no sport etc.

EchoChamber · 01/03/2024 05:49

I don’t think most people under 35 care one jot about the RF.

pilates · 01/03/2024 07:27

Mine (young adults) know the main ones.

I appreciate the RF now but to be honest as a youngster I wasn’t interested in the RF at all.

Poachedeggavocado · 02/03/2024 08:55

Mine recognise pictures of the Queen (E2) but wouldn't know the rest. They're not interested, we took them to windsor castle a couple of years ago which they declared boring after an hour. I don't think it helps that Charles came to the throne as an elderly person and to my kids even W and K are middle aged people of no interest.

WalterFence · 02/03/2024 09:03

My kids (nearly adult) would know the ones who are in the press a lot- Charles, Camilla, William and Kate, Harry and Meghan, Andrew . Wouldn’t have a clue about Edward, I imagine. Might test them on Anne. Anyone less famous, not at all.

Seems good to me. Why would a young person be interested in the RF?

Gophering · 02/03/2024 09:17

I think mine would recognise all the ones you mentioned. Also Zara and Mike tindall. We like the royals though.

lilyfire · 02/03/2024 09:20

I guess maybe this generation are a lot less likely to recognise royals because of the decline of print media. I wasn’t interested in royals as a teen but saw them all the time in newspapers so would have recognised most of them.

CatherinedeBourgh · 02/03/2024 09:23

My children (teens) would recognise Andrew (as the sex abuser).

For the rest, if he was dressed in full regalia with a crown on his head they might hazard that it was the king, but other than that wouldn't have a clue.

Noseyoldcow · 02/03/2024 09:31

Doesn't bode well for the future of the royals, does it? I'm surprised
Andrew and the Ginger Whinger weren't recognised more widely, they've been in the news relatively recently, although not in a good way.

SidekickSylvia · 02/03/2024 09:40

My children would recognise most of them now they're in their late teens, but I don't think they would've known any of them, other than Queen Elizabeth and Charles, when they were under 13. One of my daughters has met Catherine and is a fan.

WalterFence · 02/03/2024 11:36

Just tested my kids and they got Andrew and Anne but not Edward.

Nono22972 · 02/03/2024 15:11

I'm 24 and most of my friends would recognise the main ones: Charles, Camilla, Kate, William, Harry, Meghan

My little sister, who's 17, would only recognise the Waleses and Sussexes due to the media always putting the two couples against each other constantly and maybe Charles

ItsAllAboutTheDosh · 03/03/2024 23:36

They knew who Queen Elizabeth was and my son knew who Mike Tindall was. They would not know any others.

Femme2804 · 03/03/2024 23:59

I’m 35 and i dint care at all about RF. i dont understand why people really care. My children i dont think they know about RF. they only know king charles because he is the king

GellerYeller · 04/03/2024 00:09

My eldest has a slight fascination with Princess Diana, neither of them have much truck with the rest.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 04/03/2024 00:14

My 18yo would certainly know Charles & Camilla, Will & Kate, Harry & Meghan.

Not confident that she would recognise any of the others. Maybe Andrew. Perhaps Anne at a push but probably not. Almost certainly not Edward or any of the others.

She isn't at all interested in any of them. Then again, DH and I have never been interested either.

whoawhat · 04/03/2024 00:28

My 6 year old dd learnt about the royal family at school, she know queen Elizabeth, Charles, Camilla, William and kate.

She also knows random facts about rushi sunak.

I'm not sure what topic it falls under though, but I'm quite impressed with how they include current affairs in the classroom.

Agree. The late Queen, that's probably it

Kidswhowouldhavethem · 04/03/2024 00:44

My adult children only know the spotty Royals ie Mike Tindall ,Zara . The rest they are not interested in . Absolutely no chats in our house about Kate,Charles etc they are not interested inc friends.
I spoke to my son in Vancouver this evening..he is skiing in Whistler he said there was no interest in the invictus olympics ..that’s really sad for the competitors ☺️

SomethingUniqueThisTime · 04/03/2024 00:52

My adult DS (32) who works in the NHS.
The late Queen, Diana, Charles, Camilla, William, Catherine, Harry, Meghan.
Possibly Anne and Andrew. That’s about it.

ItsAllAboutTheDosh · 04/03/2024 00:56

At the time of Queen Elizabeth's funeral there was a popular tik tok post that revealed the shocking news she had four children, and the fourth child was Edward. I think most young people have no idea who Edward and Sophie are.

CC49 · 04/03/2024 02:29

On April 8, 2021, my son (then 15) had a six-hour surgery. When he came out of anesthesia, he said "The Duke of Edinburgh was calling to me." He knew nothing about the guy but was working on his DOE award at the time.

I didn't think too much about it, until the next day. Eerie!
