The royal family

At what age did Prince George wear long trousers in public?

I’ve noticed over the past few weeks that Prince Louis is wearing long trousers when out in public on “family business” I’m pretty sure George was still in shorts when he was 5, for similar events.
If this is the case, is it another piece of royal tradition which has changed with the death of QE2? The King’s boy attendants wore trousers rather than tights at the coronation, out of consideration to the boys.

I’m not saying it’s a bad thing at all if this is the case, I’ve no skin in the game, but if it is the case, it’s quite nice to see that consideration to the younger children

It's usually about 8.

When they move from pre-prep to prep

Ah so this may be a protocol chance as Louis is only 5. Going to keep an eye on it

Here is George aged 6 in trousers with QEII (likely the very same trousers that Louis was wearing to church too).

And here is Louis in trousers aged 3. So not sure if there really is any kind of tradition. Both have worn trousers when at events.

At what age did Prince George wear long trousers in public?

Short trousers are not uncommon on young boys. Parental fashion. Basically culottes anyway. And obviously young boys have trouble regulating their body temperature. There is sense in them.

It looks like I have a selective memory! Perhaps the times he’s been in shorts at this time of year have just stuck in my memory, I’d have sworn blind he was always in shorts year round, but clearly not the case!

@AuroraCake outside of the super posh people put clothes on their children that are relevant to the weather. And young children feel the cold, just like babies do.

Yet there are boys at the local (definitely not posh!) school who wear shorts all year round simply because they prefer it. My friend's son never wore trousers until he went to secondary and had to wear them for school, it's not uncommon at all!

Sure that is why they need monitoring after running around and never keep their coats on. Short trousers are not uncommon.

I believe Prince George was first seen/photographed in long trousers when he was 4 years old, at Harry & Meghan’s wedding. He was also in long trousers for Eugenie and Jack's wedding a few months later when he'd turned 5. Not sure if these 'count' (pageboy outfits).

He was in long trousers (jeans) for the 2018 family Christmas card photo, and at Christmas (walking to/from church at Sandringham).

So Prince Louis has been photographed in long trousers at pretty much the exact same age as Prince George.

I think Louis was meant to wear shorts to the Coronation but didn't.

He's a small child if he digs his heals in and says "No I'm not wearing shorts" what can the parents or nannies do about it, especially when they are stressing trying to get to church or other event on time and making children co-operate with a smile on their face.

It's not like they can say "either wear shorts or your not coming"

Why do you need to keep an eye on it 🤣

My son will live in shorts all year around given the chance. He is forced to wear trousers from about the age of 6 for winter events in church etc

Those tartan trousers looked great on Louis.

The Wales' black & white Christmas card was widely praised in France. Can't say I'm surprised - Kate dresses the children much like upper-class French kids are dressed, and I think they always look great.
