It's A Royal Knockout : The Untold Story Ch 5

Anyone else watch this?

I'd forgotten (but thoroughly enjoyed being reminded) how incredibly crass the event was in the first place but it's now widely considered a defining moment in the changing of the monarchy's image.

I think my favourite bit was Ed's flounce 😂

I will have to give it a watch!

I’ve tried to watch It’s a royal knockout before but it was too cringe…

ALittleTeawithmilk · 27/09/2023 02:13

Every time someone reminds me of ‘it’s a royal knock out’ I laugh.

I especially enjoyed Edward’s hissy fit at the end, too.

I guess that was the ‘dignified’ part of the Constitution taken care of then.

Roussette · 27/09/2023 07:58

It was absolutely dire. And yes Prince Edward was indulged with this ridiculous farce. The Queen couldn't say no. God knows what Ed expected to achieve with it

Let's remember that his flounce occurred because he would not let the press out of a hot tent to watch the event as it was happening. He herded them together to watch it on telly, all crammed together. Then walked in at the end and expected to be adored and feted for what he'd pulled off. Ain't happening, mate! He got a lukewarm reception and he flounced. What on earth did he expect after treating the media like that.... all day crammed round a screen in a tent.

It was the most embarrasing light entertainment Royal show, and the choice of presenter was even more embarrassing later on. (Stuart Hall, sexual offences)

Every now and again the RF poke their heads above the parapet and make a pigs ear of things!

Yes.

I was quite shocked by that and it was something I hadn't actually realised before. Just shows how out of touch and contemptuous he was of those he considered lesser.

Stuart Hall acting the goat was nauseating but then he always was Envy

If anyone wants to see the whole thing it's on YT:

If you just fancy the flounce this version never fails to make me laugh 😂

I couldn't get the links to watch but thanks for telling me about this. That whole thing was so embarrassing, I remember the event... cringe!

CathyorClaire · 27/09/2023 11:09

I don't know what's gone wrong with the links but I'll try again

Flounce:

Play Prince Edward off, keyboard cat

Edward is convinced that the press will have loved It's A Royal Knockout.

😂😂Just thinking about what the journos would have been saying about it all to each other, while sitting crammed in a hot tent for a day watching it on the Tele …..I’m laughing so hard I can barely type.

And then he got the shits with them and flounced off…🤣🤣

Startyabastard · 27/09/2023 12:58

Every now and again the RF poke their heads above the parapet and make a pigs ear of things!

You aren't wrong. They rarely do it (I was born in the 90s).
I wish I could flounce like that.
Do you remember that film they made about their life with the BBC or something and they didn't like it so they took it down.
Members of the public keep uploading it to YouTube but it gets taken down very shortly after due to the royals dislike.

Yep. Ditto Diana's interview and it's very hard to find Charles's Dimbleby interview. Sometimes it's there, then it's gone again

JSMill · 27/09/2023 18:39

The thing was so cringeworthy I couldn't bear to watch the documentary. What were they thinking?!

CathyorClaire · 27/09/2023 19:50

Recent reports have them picking and choosing which bits of the coro and funeral broadcasters were allowed to show and even more appallingly will be allowed to show in future with a 'perpetuity edit'.

Outrageous considering we paid for Charles' hat party and the Queen's send-off and we pay for the BBC😡

And then we have to endure those that insist the royal's have no power 🙄

What were they thinking?!

Ed was keen on a career in TV production at the time but really how the others allowed themselves to be roped in to such a circus even to support his crazy dream is beyond me.

I'm glad they did though 😁

Thanks for the info@CathyorClaire - I will watch that

I know Edward stormed off because the press weren’t enthusiastic enough about his offering lol

It makes me wonder if any of the Windsors would even appear in front of journalists like that they today.
Now the Windsors need to have their image so tightly managed they cannot answer genuine questions from non pre approved journalists , they ignore ( or have boarded up ) peaceful protest , they curate ‘crowds’, they film a so called ‘spontaneous’ appearance on closed sets … I could go on

We are told W and K are ‘popular’ ( they dont even try to pretend with the rest of them) but it’s all tightly controlled image making . Packaged up and sold .

But they are made rich by taking from this country . They should be accountable to the people and to the press - not this ‘royals ‘ nonsense
At the very least their accounts and processes should be freely available like any other public body

Novella4 · 28/09/2023 13:03

That should be ‘ not this rota nonsense ‘

queentim · 28/09/2023 15:29

Wow you can really see the resemblance between Edward here and Will

Lalgarh · 29/09/2023 00:06

Itvx doco The Real Crown on now. I'm watching Roddy Llewellyn crooning in French.

Will they mention mad Johnny Bindon and his pint jug trick though

Tatslookawful · 30/09/2023 18:34

@Lalgarh do you reckon JB really had a fling with Princess M? & how many glasses could he allegedly balance?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 01/10/2023 01:20

Every so often I’m reminded of this and I always think, no I’m sure I just dreamt that, it can’t really have happened surely? But apparently it did. Weird.

MrsLeonFarrell · 01/10/2023 10:18

I'm trying to think back, it's my memory that even at the time people thought it was dreadful. Am I remembering correctly?

I remember it clearly. Dreadful and laughable. Not in a good way!

Glad it's not just me, the royals were so hammy, as if they were cosplaying regular people, it was embarrassing.

MrsLeonFarrell · 01/10/2023 10:45

Just googled it, I'd totally forgotten that Princess Anne was involved.
