I don’t think that’s fair: the point of the IG is to help veterans and being called killers/bombers/whatever can really harm them. Harry shouldn’t have made the comments he did, but he is not the only veteran in attendance who will see those signs.

Dabralor · 10/09/2023 13:34

It's all part of the gleefully insatiable media circus that surrounds this man.

queentim · 10/09/2023 15:42

The demonstrators aren't against Prince Harry himself.

They're anti-war protests and think these games are a celebration of war. As per the article.

wordler · 10/09/2023 15:51

Germany has a fairly strong anti-war movement. It was always going to draw protests holding an event for veterans there no matter whether Harry was involved or not.

Whether the Mirror would have bothered reporting on the protests though if they hadn’t been able to use the Harry headline is another story.

Some of the protesters have called harry a murderer though, and see him as part of the problem due to him being a prince of the uk.

Probably knew they’d get more press coverage if they target Harry.

He was an idiot to include his ‘kill’ numbers in Spare because it will be used over and over again for stuff like this.

I'm finding it hard not to wince at Germans talking about wars not being legal, or making puns around the name of "Bomber" Harris, who nobody would have heard of ever had it not been for Germany's second "illegal war". Yes, the bombing techniques he designed were controversial in some quarters, and events like the bombing of Dresden were horrifically casualty heavy. So was what the Germans did to occupied countries, the Jews and others. I would certainly not describe myself as a pacifist, but I would wish all possible alternative options exhausted before military might is used... but I am a bit 🙄about Germans lecturing others on war, especially given the fact that the vestiges of the Nazi Party are alive, well, and literally kicking in the country.

As for the royals, I have little interest, and I have no idea what Harry said about kills - maybe that was unwise if he did. But seriously, what do you all think that soldiers were doing in Afghanistan. The waltz??? And look at the cost of the lost war for women and girls.

It’s a bit childish, do they think history would have turned out better if the allies had taken the “pacifist” option of letting Germany get on with murdering their own people and half of Eastern/Central Europe?

wordler · 10/09/2023 17:44

I think Germany’s past role in two world wars is exactly why there is strong anti war sentiment there now.

Some of the protesters have call ALL of them murderers. They see all of them as being part of the problem and military industrial complex. As per the article.

Exactly.

I understand Germans being anti-war. They are highly embarrassed and ashamed.

They called all the Veterans ‘perpetrators now victims.’

ALittleTeawithmilk · 10/09/2023 23:36

And if William or Charles had been there they would have labelled them as perpetrators too, as both have served in the armed forces.

I think protesting war is a good thing. It’s especially good that Germany does have a strong protest movement. Having those beliefs doesn’t stop me liking Harry though. And doesn’t stop me having a great deal of respect for the veterans.

PrincessOfTigger · 11/09/2023 06:42

They’re not protesting against war though, they’re protesting against veterans

ALittleTeawithmilk · 11/09/2023 06:52

They were protesting war.

“I am against your war”.
Organiser Lukas Baumer, 26, said: “We are not against the soldiers or athletes. We don’t think the Games should exist because it is normalising war and war is not a normal thing. And because it is being sponsored by organisations like Boeing and Lockheed Martin, who are weapons makers.

Granted it’s a messy article - not very well written, especially given that it’s so short. But it’s there.
