and Kate Princess of Wales?

We've got to get past a state funeral and a coronation first. Then I suppose they will want to give us some time off as we will be bored of it all. Expect it in the next few years. Charles is getting on a bit and having a prince about to help in the Firm makes sense.

ZenNudist · 08/09/2022 21:54

Actually that assumes you know about investiture. Watch the Crown. That shows you Charles' investiture as the Prince of Wales.

I've been to Caernarfon Castle and stood on the dias. I can't imagine doing a similar ceremony in this day and age. How tedious.

Some of us remember the real thing (old). My parents got a colour TV to watch it in its full glory, and we all marvelled at how green the grass was Hmm.

I understand that William will now be invested as Prince of Wales, but I expect it will be a while.

onlylarkin · 08/09/2022 22:03

I suspect it won't be until we'll after the Coronation, which I hope reports are true that Charles will scale down.

I do wonder about the Duchy of Cornwall though? I am not sure what the protocol is for that?

AbsentinSpring · 08/09/2022 22:07

I wonder if the media will stop calling her Kate Middleton once she becomes a Princess?

OP posts:
takemetomybeach · 08/09/2022 22:45

She's a Duchess. That's essentially the same rank as Princess.

onlylarkin · 08/09/2022 22:48

Media will never stop. Nor will they even stop calling Meghan a Markle.

I saw an article about this once. It is said they do it because people are more likely to search for Kate Middlton than Catherine Duchess of Cambridge.

It us all about driving traffic for ad revenue.

I know she's the Duchess of Cambridge, but Duchess Kate doesn't trip off the tongue as lightly as Princess Kate And yes I know she won't officially be called that but it might catch on with the Press ...

Wonder if Meghan & Harry will call their kids Prince & Princess now.

I’m not sure people will be up for that much coronation. The Charles investiture thing was kind made up really anyway. No need for it. I mean the Prince of Wales title is so associated with his father. Maybe just wait until they are giving out titles to George.

CaptainBarbosa · 09/09/2022 00:41

I'd put money on it being William's 50th Birthday present.

For now he will be known as The Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge, eventually dropping off use of the Cambridge to be The Duke of Cornwall, and then on to The Prince of Wales.

Like a 10 year plan 😂

Christ…given he probably has what at most 20 years give or take before he is King won’t that be totally useless.

Well seen as their about to print a shit to of money with Charlie's face on it, that even by the time his reign comes to an end his mother's face on some coinage will probably still be in circulation, then they will have to Print Will's face, I don't think they are concerned about "totally useless" at least giving a title of you do no investiture doesn't cost much money just some new stationary printed 😂

SenecaFallsRedux · 09/09/2022 01:24

I think William will be made Prince of Wales before the coronation. There doesn't have to be an investiture. There really is no reason to wait very long.

Catherine became a princess by marriage when she married William. If he had not been given a dukedom, she would have been known as Princess William.

JubileeTissues · 09/09/2022 01:29

"I'd put money on it being William's 50th Birthday present."

😂 yeah, don't put too much on Charles waiting until he's mid eighties. It'll be next year during the coronation

onlylarkin · 09/09/2022 02:25

I think it will depend on how popular Charles III is. If public opinion is favorable, there will be no hurry. If it is not, William as Prince of Wales, and more importantly Catherine as Princess of Wales, will go a long way in returning favor to the monarchy.

Just my humble opinion.

Japanesejazz · 09/09/2022 02:42

He is the prince of wales now
its automatic upon the death of the queen
Kate has automatically become princess of Wales
although because of the Diana fans there has been some discussion as to whether she will use the title
Heard camilla referred to as queen today so hopefully Charles has put his foot down and decided they have mourned for long enough

onlylarkin · 09/09/2022 02:51

No, Will does not automatically become the Prince of Wales.

"Although he is heir to the throne, Prince William will not automatically become Prince of Wales - that will have to be conferred on him by his father. He has inherited his father's title of Duke of Cornwall - William and Kate are now titled Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge."

onlylarkin · 09/09/2022 03:00

I do agree with you about it being long enough since Diana's death though. But there are a lot of people who still cling to her memory, which is why Camilla never used the title. I do not believe that there will be much opposition to Catherine holding the title. In fact, I think that the Diana supporters will welcome her to the role.

I also believe that William and Catherine have a good bond with Wales and will be welcomed by those who support the monarchy.

I agree. I think Royal officials will want to give them the Prince/Princess of Wales titles within the next year to bolster popularity with the public. Kate is well liked, and the title would reinforce her as the nation’s princess in a similar manner to Diana. The press would lap it up.

JADS · 09/09/2022 07:08

Was at Caernarfon Castle and it had some pretty hard-core scaffolding and works going on. I would imagine they will leave it until finished.

I think it will be a year or 2 until it happens.

JADS · 09/09/2022 07:09

I agree that the DoC becoming Princess of Wales would be a stellar PR move

I can see Charles abdicating when William is in his early 50’s.

CardiffMam · 09/09/2022 07:27

I don't think they'll risk holding an investiture in Caernarfon again. The support for the monarchy has decreased significantly since the sixties- and there were protests then.

I can't see Caernarfon welcoming another Englishman as their Prince. If they do arrange an investiture, it's more likely to be in Cardiff.

Why is everyone so convinced that Charles will abdicate at some point just to put William on the throne?

Bizarre.

She will never be 'princess Kate/Catherine', you have to be born one.

Diana was never 'Princess Diana' either.

Catherine is, as well as a duchess, 'Princess William'.

Lots of royals have lots of titles and some choose not to use them, eg until yesterday Camilla was technically 'princess of Wales', but she didn't use that title.
