Film being made about Prince Andrew's disastrous Newsnight interview

It will be interesting to see the behind-the-scenes discussions this film will show.

"The story of how the BBC obtained the bombshell interview with Prince Andrew about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is to become a film called Scoop, and Hugh Grant is one of the unconfirmed names in the frame to portray the disgraced royal, Deadline has learned.

Acclaimed Your Honor screenwriter Peter Moffat is writing the Scoop screenplay for The Lighthouse Film & TV production company. The news is likely to be greeted with little amusement from Andrew’s mother, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and other members of the Royal Family. Buckingham Palace had hoped that, when it came to the errant royal, the less seen and heard the better.
Moffat explained that Scoop is “about how the BBC’s Newsnight team got the scoop, then the actual filming of it,” adding: “The other thing is, ‘why did he agree to do it?’ How was it that he decided it was a good idea to do a great big long interview with Emily Maitlis on the BBC?,” Moffat asked incredulously, as he reflected on the Duke’s arrogance, ignorance, and his charm, which he said “quite often covers up for the bad stuff, that’s what I think.”"

Not sure why ITV does not have the full interview of the Newsnight producer (and Scoops author), Sam MacAlister on YouTube, but I saw her talking about it on This Morning. It should be available on the 5June catch up on ITV. It was very funny. She also confirmed that Beatrice was there.

This is the link of the full interview on This Morning.

Hugh Grant has denied any involvement. I think he’d be tricky casting- Hugh Grant is very charming and his characters all have some of that charm, even the rotten ones. Andrew OTOH is thick and charmless to the core.

I think Rupert Vansittart would do a good job.

shedwithivy · 16/07/2022 07:20

Timothy spall?

antelopevalley · 17/07/2022 14:15

Timothy Spall would be brilliant as Andrew.

I’m wondering what the new picture of Andrew is that’s being talked about in connection with the interview with EM and the new film being made.

I think a dramatisation of the events will be a good watch but nothing will ever beat squirming through the original with hands over eyes Grin

I took the suggestion that Hugh Grant would play PA as a swipe at Hugh Grant. He has long had a contentious relationship with the red tops, volunteering repeatedly to testify against them.
I was thinking Hugh Bonneville would make a good PA in this production ... Hugh Grant's much to wily.

IrisVersicolor · 30/07/2022 10:33

While the car crash interview itself was funny, I don’t think abuse of teenage girls is comedy. Given the amount of time PA spent with Epstein, and Epstein’s MO, the likelihood of VG being the only one PA had sex with is vanishingly small.

CathyorClaire · 30/07/2022 11:32

There is some talk of The Photograph being recreated for the film.

I expect by then whatever's in it will have been leaked but if it hasn't it can't do the ratings any harm.

Agreed.

I don't know how Charles is going to handle this going forward but my impression is that William is inclined to be tough.

I think Hugh Grant would be amazing! Although I don't know if I could sit through the whole thing, as I have really bad problems with vicarious embarassment generally.

Gawd so do I! (The vicarious embarrassment thing.) I just cringe inside and can't watch so much live stuff on TV / online. Especially live interviews or panel shows like Questiontime with inept politicians; but that Andrew stuff was at a whole new level.

I watched it in the end in the 'company' of MN and the Behavior Panel guys on You Tube, bit by bit. Emily Maitlis was excellent.

CathyorClaire · 07/09/2022 16:33

I think Stephen Fry might make a good Andrew too...

@notanotheroneagain thanks so much for posting that clip of the interview with Sam Mcalister about the background to the PA interview and her experience of being there at the time. It is a very informative and candid clip.
