AIBU to suggest the Royal Family is no longer required

I feel they have become irrelevant.
Who cares that a 95 year old can't have Christmas at one of her country homes? It's headline news that she's staying at Windsor castle. What a joke.
The whole lot of them are pampered lazy entitled and should just be phased out.
We will still get money from tourrism because the history is fascinating. They can all live out their lives in luxury but enough is enough. They make political statements, break the law (allegedly) and require a whole heap of financial support.
Get rid .

OP posts:
SonicBroom · 27/12/2021 02:17

I care.

MadMadMadamMim · 27/12/2021 02:21

Goodness, this is so boring. There have been comments on this topic for donkey's years with various people suggesting the Royal family are outdated, or should be got rid of.

In general, it appears to be a minority view and it's not going to happen so why waste thought or energy on it? If you don't care, what's it matter to you?

TwilightSkies · 27/12/2021 02:23

I agree, there’s no need for them.

Rainbows89 · 27/12/2021 02:48

I have a lot of respect and admiration for the Queen.

Couldn’t give two hoots about the rest of them. I think they should be phased out once the Queen passes.

CheeseMmmm · 27/12/2021 02:55

This is a question that just gets the same set of answers. I think that's fairly well known?

OP what would be a more interesting thread than just rehashing 1000 similar threads, would be-

You post what you would replace with.
Why you think that would be better.
Any difficulties/ downsides you see, and how you think worth it and what would do to mitigate.
The upsides you see with your preferred approach.
Your comments on the international impacts, and here, the cost of dismantling monarchy. Who would be head of c of e, what done with all land/wealth (they don't keep I assume), time and cost of changing loads of laws, all sorts of structures and procedures across parliament (HoC, HoL and I'm sure more).
Where your head of state/ president would live, what level financial support, expectations around expensive/ flashiness of state functions eg visit from visiting dignitaries etc.

CheeseMmmm · 27/12/2021 03:03

'It's headline news that she's staying at Windsor castle. What a joke.'

The armed intruder was in the news as well. I was quite interested in that when saw headline.

ShippingNews · 27/12/2021 03:13

And what would you replace it with ? The Monarch is the head of state, so then you'd have....who ? An elected president ? Look around the world at the elected leaders of republics and then tell me how awful it is to have a monarch.

Queeen · 27/12/2021 03:15

Yanbu. Long overdue that we get rid of them.

CheeseMmmm · 27/12/2021 03:16

OP

On these threads it's pretty random unless OP says -you tell us- what you want to see instead?

The royal family aren't of massive interest to me tbh never have been.
I have no strong emotions either way.

I did think republican for years when younger, over time thinking about what instead, international things to sort out, the immense expense of setting up alternative, rewriting stacks of laws, deciding who head of armed forces, CofE, what happens to everything owned by crown, etc etc.

And that depending OP on your ideas,
Probably will end up with politicians anyway.
More things to vote for, argue over, division over.

OP does your plan mean we won't get president Boris? Or a trump? A Putin or similar?

It's all well and good to say get rid.
But then what?
If not got pretty well thought out plan, it's just hot air.

And not v interesting thread.
I like them!
I don't!
Skip Charles!
I'm not fussed!
I like royal weddings and things!
I don't!

Etc etc.

AnnaMarieQ · 27/12/2021 03:19

I have the greatest respect for our Queen. I have no
Interest in the rest of them.

OP who would you like to see as Head of the UK?

CheeseMmmm · 27/12/2021 03:21

Interested if OP sets out her plan for dismantling, why worth enormous cost effort etc.

And what prefers when comes to head of state.

OP is going for it though! In terms of 'let's have a heated debate'!

Most threads like this say after queen.

Going with queen also lazy useless etc is really pushing for a proper fight!

CheeseMmmm · 27/12/2021 03:37

Like I mentioned I think earlier.

Not that interested.

Was republican tending, over years realised better the devil you know. And esp given the enormous complexity expense etc etc to change.

The thing I think Queen was fab for-

When Saudi king visiting. Offered tour of estate.
Land rover came he ushered to passenger seat.
She hops in goes bombing round estate (driving skills etc role ww2 mechanic driver).
He can't say no stop as she Queen.
Women not allowed to drive Saudi.

Haha nice one!

I like her just for that tbh.

She being queen meant able to stick 2 fingers up. And did Grin

Obsidiansphere · 27/12/2021 03:38

Yanbu

Pangolin44 · 27/12/2021 03:43

Individually the Royal Family mean very little to me.

When it comes to political structure, they're essential to me.

I quite like living in a constitutional monarchy. Republics have far more scope to go rogue.

onlychildhamster · 27/12/2021 03:57

I do agree but I think I am in the minority.

I have a lefty friend who thinks we should keep the queen because he thinks that if we had a presidential system, the British would vote for Farage for president (yes he has such a low opinion of the British people) and he couldn't live in the country then. I knew at that point that if even a die hard lefty like himself would think that way, this was a lost cause at least for this generation. The stats also reflect this.

I think we should focus on more important things like how to get the Tories out of power.

mallees · 27/12/2021 04:00

Geez! What is your problem? So critical of OP... you may leave if not happy with this thread!
MollyQueenOfSocks · 27/12/2021 04:16

"I have a lefty friend who thinks we should keep the queen because he thinks that if we had a presidential system, the British would vote for Farage for president (yes he has such a low opinion of the British people)"

I mean, they do keep voting Tory... I think his low opinion is pretty accurate!

As for the monarchy I agree. They don't seem to serve a purpose except the old bandied about excuse of "tourism", which wouldn't just suddenly dry up should they be abolished. People come here to see the UK, I honestly don't think people come here and give two hoots about seeing the royals except the odd obsessed American.

CheeseMmmm · 27/12/2021 04:16

It's only a post! And just what I think.

OP asked yes/no question. Would have been good to put a poll as yes/no!

Saying should go is all well and good, what want instead is relevant, and interesting.

Otherwise it's just. I want them to go. I don't. I don't care.

Fair enough, nothing wrong surely with being interested in what OP wants instead.

Not sure why see as got a problem/critical.

I'm interested. I want to understand OP thoughts more, nothing more!

Thanks for letting me know I can stop posting though! Good to know.

CheeseMmmm · 27/12/2021 04:23

Molly just remembered something about the not interested thing!

I was... Really? Surely not....

Driving through Germany for hols few years ago. Stopped motorway service station for petrol crisps etc.

While rest of family dithering over snacks. Perused magazines.

Shelf nearest eye level had about 5.. five! Magazines about the royal family.

I still am a bit.. why?

But there you go.

gerispringer · 27/12/2021 04:32

People love a gossip and the RF are just one big soap opera for the plebs to gawp at. Their main role is to pose for photos isn’t it? If it was so much better than the alternative you’d have loads of republics clamouring to have royals instead - I don’t see that happening anywhere, can you imagine King Donald I of the USA and his ghastly family?

CheeseMmmm · 27/12/2021 04:55

You can't just create a royal family though, unless they create themselves in despot regime or similar!

I really don't like the idea of head of state being yet another political appointment.

USA won't get king trump.

Current system we won't get politician, v popular celeb, a despotic charismatic loon, a dog that rescued a child stuck somewhere, Noel Edmonds, a popular ex sportsperson, Orville the duck etc etc.

CheeseMmmm · 27/12/2021 05:15

I mean I don't really give a toss.

RF are anachronistic, get what given even if woah bad un, own huge tranches of land massive personal fortunes just because, have v chequered history to say the least, really should have stayed aloof silent rather than spewing soap stuff, although no longer seen as close to God in practice class ridden society still sees as worth all sorts of flag waving etc...

Used to think nope.

But. Changing it all? Massive massive thing. Just cost an absolute fortune. The crown assets. I'd guess sold off fairly quickly. Countries have same monarch? Messy.

And we could end up with Orville the duck, operating out of a semi detached house in Watford, who is a devoted follower of the (sadly missed) natural law party, etc etc

Meh.

Royals replaced?
Still enormous wealth. So still untouchable re crime etc.
Class system not going anywhere.
More sodding bombardment leading up to election.

Still have to spunk £££ on the whole thing.
The pomp and ceremony is enjoyed by loads.
Line of bland limos, no horse parades and what not.
I suppose all that side no need, jobs lost, regiments disbanded.

It's a lot of work and would be a huge change to loads of things that weren't even seen as connected.

Too much effort upheaval for result uncertain.

It's interesting for sure.

gofg · 27/12/2021 05:26

Oh here we go again - this is getting so boring!

Might I suggest OP that your opinion, which is just a copy of what other posters start threads about every couple of months, is no longer required. Much as you don't care about what happens in thei RF's lives, I don't care about your opinion.

anon12345678901 · 27/12/2021 05:36

I care. I like the Royal Family and having a monarchy. So you may want to get rid but I don't. I want to keep a monarchy for the U.K.
