The royal family

Is the Royal Brand worth anything without the Tabloids?

I have to admit I don't really follow the Royals. They're privileged individuals who act as tourist attractions. I don't have an opinion of whether that contribution justifies the expense.

I understand Harry's feelings about the press and the desire not to be a part of it any more.

However, I am interested in business, PR and marketing. It seems their plan to be financially self sufficient centres around exploiting the Royal Brand and effectively making a living as "celebrities". Is the Royal Brand really so valuable that it can work without support from the Tabloid press?

I don’t know and I don’t know what the truth is about this pair but they do seem to go out of their way to get peoples backs up 🤷‍♀️

They just want to be rich celeb types like the Kardashian family. Maybe they will succeed or maybe they'll fall flat on their arses. I don't really care, they're so annoying.

Are they biting the hand that feeds them ?
Yes. Most of their publicity comes from the tabloid press, and a few sycophantic magazine titles.
Most others only show a cursory interest.

Their camp seem happy enough to leak to US trash titles like People, so it does seem like a bit of a silly gesture. They’re not supposed to be working royals any more, though, and they’re not in the U.K. You would think from there, they could just develop a thicker skin. This “letter to the tabloid editors” just seems to attract more attention.

In particular, refusing to corroborate stories and saying they won’t engage with those media organisations at all also suggests that they won’t correct stories run past their office pre-publication for comment, which just seems silly.

But I think a lot of this comes from Harry’s issues with the media and thinking they killed his mum. He’s being lead by his heart, not good PR advice.

Harry has stepped back from royal duties, and one of his stated aims was to get away from press attention.

The Sussex letter has no bearing on how tabloids will interact with working (and even minor, occasionally working royals), and H&M are now out in the territory of how tabloids report on slebs (who do not have benefit of desks such as those reported to exist for full time royals)

Jillyhilly · 20/04/2020 15:47

Isn’t this just the usual sleb thing of craving and needing publicity, but wanting it to be only on their terms?

Anyway they would never give an interview to any of these tabloids so what the heck difference does it make? If anything by doing this they’ve guaranteed that the tabloid coverage will now be considerably more vitriolic than before.

DeRigueurMortis · 20/04/2020 16:49

Personally I'd like the press to stop all coverage of them.

They are utterly irrelevant to the U.K.

Let's see how their profile and money making activities hold up if no one is taking the slightest interest in them.

If someone really wanted to step away from press attention they wouldn’t move to LA.
