Do you live out of the UK? Or just stay up all night, every night? Are you paid? What are your lives like outside of night watching?

Sorry if inappropriate questions, just so interested and grateful for what you do!

I'm in the UK.

We don't have set times to be on so you might never know when we're about

We all have regular ids that we post with as regular members

Were awaiting imminent new super powers 🦸‍♀️

I do hope you get some more power to deal with troublemakers.Flowers

SirChenjins · 31/10/2022 08:12

I can’t believe that MNHQ doesn’t employ people to do this and pay them actual money. V cheeky of them Shock

Dogtooth · 31/10/2022 08:15

The first rule about night watch is you do not talk about night watch.

@SirChenjins Mumsnet makes about 20p a year in profits and people are willing to do it.

Whinge · 31/10/2022 08:22

20p?

You're joking right?

The Night watch do a fantastic job and I know people want to help, but MN should definitely have some paid moderators working over night.

OneFrenchEgg · 31/10/2022 08:27

Surely MN makes more than 20p a year! It's v popular and still attracts advertisers- I think I've found the right accounts?

They make a hell of a lot more, and should be paying for moderators overnight. If people genuinely believe they're making such a tiny profit then more fool them. 🙄

They’re mugs.

Sorry to the Night Watch g’wan but you do such an important job that it’s a disgrace that you’re not paid, and given access to better tools to deal with all the shite that can kick-off here after hours.

This. MN should be embarrassed that they don't consider the night moderators worthy of payment TBH.

Does it hell make about 20p a year in profits - and I’m willing to bet the shitstorm that was its new platform launch didn’t come cheap.

The profit increase between 2020 and 2021 is interesting. When did they get out the begging bowl and start offering Premium as a way to raise desperately-needed funds?

Etinoxaurus · 31/10/2022 08:56

DobbyTheHouseElk · 30/10/2022 20:25

I think they are volunteers. Gawd knows why they do it. No protection when it all kicks off. Really by now MNHQ should be paying people not asking for favours.

This 100%
Shockingn that Mumsnet doesn’t have paid moderators overnight. I’ve even costed it and offered to run it with safeguarding trained staff 🙄

Watchthesunrise · 31/10/2022 08:59

@OneFrenchEgg oooh thanks for finding and posting those accounts. Verrry interesting!

I don't have any view on paying them / I think it stems from the original vibe MN had which was quite close knit with mods being chatty and dropping in on threads. But I looked up the accounts as I didn't think they could be penniless with how popular they are!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 31/10/2022 09:07

I thought MN made more than that. 20p are you having a laugh?

I remember when the night watch started and it was a kind gesture by some posters. Even unpaid they should still have some power. But it’s shocking they aren’t paid. @MNHQ should be embarrassed but they won’t be.

Cattytabby · 31/10/2022 09:11

Those account figures have three zeros at the end, just in case people don't realise.

RambamThankyouMam · 31/10/2022 09:15

Night watchers! Stop working for no pay! Justine & co. are waxing fat on the profits of your unpaid labour.

NeverHadANickname · 31/10/2022 09:16

It is definitely time the night watchers are paid. MN is a profit making business and it feels a bit like they are taming advantage now. I could understand at the start maybe to see how it went.

@TomHardysCBBC
You normally make millions in revenue and suddenly there's none left?
Last year we had revenue of £7m and pre-tax profit of £570k. We have a a couple of loans too which were due to be paid back this autumn - we've deferred payment on those for a year. We really wouldn't be asking for help if we didn't need it. But equally we hope to make Premium something really valuable that people will be happy to choose to pay for irrespective of the situation with advertisers. Over time we plan to add features and Premium member offers so it seems like a no-brainer to subscribe and we can rely on advertising less.

JustineMumsnet · 08/04/2020 14:22
@TomHardysCBBC
So that pre tax profit last year of a half a million is gone?
Yes - we have lots of fixed costs - mostly staff and server/hosting/Saas products. Our monthly staff bill is 350k so any dip in revenues hits the bottom line pretty quicky. Put simply if we don't cut costs/ generate sufficient revenue we will soon run out of cash.
