Rescuing a cat today....

So, I saw plea on FB last night about a cat who has basically been abandoned. Her owner was living in residential care/some kind of assisted living and has been sent to prison. The cat has been hanging about the home but as the weather is changing they were worrying about the cat.

I've spoken to a warden at the home so I know it's all true. Dd and I are off to try & nab her this morning.

i have 2 cats one of whom we rescued earlier this year so I'm all set up.

My question is this - obvs when we get to the home I'm going to see if they have any more knowledge of the cat, but I'm assuming not. So I'm guessing the easiest thing for me to do is take the cat to my vets, get her scanned for a chip, hopefully there is one and her vet info should be on there and then either I can phone that vet for her medical info or my vet can make the call??

Yes I will update with cat tax later!

You may find getting the vet to treat the cat difficult if it's been chipped to someone else. Obviously if it is in need of any urgent treatment the vet will treat it, but many are wary as it can be a slippery slope.

I guess you need to try to find out from the warden at the home if they have any contact details for a case worker for the owner. You can then contact them and ask if they can get permission from the owner, or at least advise you what the usual protocol for this is - it can't be an isolated case of a pet owner being placed in custody.

You may be able to get advice as well from a cat rescue organisation like Cats Protection, as they are most likely to have come across similar cases.

Good luck. I once catnapped a cat in conjunction with a local rescue. He’s been living outside and looked awful. Turned out he was seriously ill. But he spent his last days in luxury.

Thank you for wanting to help and offer the cat kindness and love. I hope you get her you may need a trap from a rescue group

A lovely thing to do for this little soul before winter hits. I hope it all goes well with capturing her and getting her to the vet.

Good luck!

Sometimes a local rescue or CP can help with getting the microchip transferred into your name when a cat has been abandoned as vets (understandably) are reluctant to do this without permission from last known owner.
