Cat owners: how to stop their scratching of sofas?

I have scratching posts. They use those as well as the sofa.

Apparently there is sticky tape sheets you can use to deter them too. But don’t these damage the fabric of the sofa?

Any recommendations would be great.

Thank you.

I had some success with aluminium foil a while ago, and also standing another item of furniture such as a side table in the way, so they can't reach the bit they want to scratch.

Booties?

I managed to get my cat stop scratching the foot of my bed by covering it with a thick towel that was tucked in so he couldn’t get under it, and a scratching post right next to it to divert his attention. Eventually it broke the habit and even though the towel is gone he doesn’t think to try now- I’ve got to be honest, it took a good few months though! As it’s a sofa could you tuck a thick throw around that end?

i use the sticky tape sheets. i just got a new sofa. my old one was second hand and not very good condition so i let them do whatever to that one.

the sticky sheets are plastic my cats HATE the feel. ive took them off and replaced with no damage to my sofa, its fake leather

My cat uses his scratching posts but uses the sofa for attention and/or a reaction which he gets. He's also the same with the bedroom curtains if I'm still in bed. If I tried other things mentioned he'd just turn to something else. you

Have you rubbed cat nip onto the trees? It might make them more attractive than the sofa.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 04/11/2026 18:14

You can't.
Buy a concrete unfurnished sofa.

Blankets or throws over the sofa.

GrumblingGeek · 04/11/2026 19:30

Remove the sofa

Well by doing anything the cat wants at that point of her day. Sorry I know it’s not helpful but it’s the truth! She literally sits by the sofa and raises her paw when she wants something, and if I don’t do it she starts scratching the sofa…

All my cats have scratched the sofa until my latest who, as a kitten before I got her, was brought up with leather sofas and hardwood floors. She never uses anything but her scratching post
