What did MrCat catch?

Is this a rat?

And why didn’t he eat it? MrCat eats his catches. (Thank goodness! No half-dead gifts for us.)

For size comparison, MrCat is big, 6.2kg.

What did MrCat catch?

Looks like a rat to me

Skybluecoat · 29/10/2026 07:48

It’s a rat.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 29/10/2026 07:49

It's not very big - so if it is a ratty it's a baby one.
Our cats traditionally eat what they catch with the exception of rats too.

Dilbertian · 29/10/2026 08:45

Why does he eat mice and birds, but not rats?

(Mind you, he’s a fussy bastard when it comes to cat food, too.)

I wonder if it's because they regard rats as a threat rather than a prey?

Gettingbysomehow · 29/10/2026 09:04

Well done MrCat. He'll provide for you during the apocalypse 😛

Howinthehelldidthishappen · 29/10/2026 09:16

My old cat used to eat everything she caught, except for the rats. She never ate those, but did kill them.

One of my current cats used to bring them home alive and keep them as his new friends.

Your pic looks very ratty to me.

HappyToSmile · 29/10/2026 14:52

My old cat would eat rats, but not squirrels.

Littlenellsberet · 29/10/2026 14:55

That's a baby rat.
If it's come out of a nest then there will be more coming your way....

Lovely cat BTW😺

OccasionalHope · 29/10/2026 14:57

Smallish rat, possibly a young one. Well done Mr Cat.

Cornetto98 · 29/10/2026 15:01

MrCat has caught a rat. Is MrCat an indoor or outdoor cat btw? You probably know already it’s a health and safety risk if MrCat scratches or bites you after catching a rat.

Pixiedust1234 · 29/10/2026 15:24

Juvenile rat.

Well done MrCat! Now go back and deal with the rest of the nest 👀🐀

Podgedodge · 29/10/2026 15:41

That tail says rat.

GrumblingGeek · 29/10/2026 15:44

rat.
maybe it had ingested some poison or something and Mr Cat knew not to eat it.

worrisomeasset · 29/10/2026 15:50

My cat eats mice but doesn't eat rats. Instead, he uses the rat corpse as a toy to play with in the back garden (luckily for us, he never brings his prey inside the house). He eats mice whole, which would be difficult to do with a rat and I think that's the reason he doesn't eat them.

SausageLabLady · 29/10/2026 15:57

My dad’s cat eats everything he catches except for voles. They must taste funny. MrCats probably getting bad vibes from this catch. Like pp said, maybe it’s eaten some poison or something.

Or it could contain the Hantavirus and the cat knows this.

Londog · 30/10/2026 01:20

A little vole - our cats catch lots of them here from the hedgerows paw

Mice and birds eat seeds, berries, the odd worm (my 6yr self thought they didn't taste that bad, especially in a mud pie, shhhhh).

Rats eat rubbish, rotting food etc. Whatever they can get.

There's a reason why farmers/manufacturers boast about grass/natural fed animals versus factory feed. What you put in the body affects the flavour. Same for wild beasties. Foxes etc only eat them because they are hungry but would probably prefer mice and voles.

That means in a zombie apocalypse I will be the first to go. My flesh has been infused with sweets and chocolate and not kale or chia seeds so I will be extra delicious. I can live with that thought. (And I think my blood sugar is low now I've re-read my post 😂).

Gettingbysomehow · 30/10/2026 10:28

Thsts one fat little rat.

This seems plausible.

(Particularly the bit about who will be tastier come the apocalypse. Shove over, I'm joining you on the buffet.)

One of our cats found a rats nest. When he came over the fence with his third baby of the day, we shut the cat flap off early 😬😬

Callipygion · 30/10/2026 23:36

Years ago we had a cat that caught at least one rat a day. Looks like your cat has caught one there! Our cat usually used to eat half of her catch and leave the back end outside the back door!

TheAngryPuxie · 01/11/2026 14:56

My cat sometimes brings in live mice or lizards. Mostly, though, he just leaves guts and entrails on the kitchen floor fot us to clear up!
