Handhold Needed

Just looking for a handhold, we’re in the middle of a much needed 12 day holiday and our cattery have been in touch to advise that our old boy has taken a turn downhill. He’s 16 and on long term medication so we (and the cattery) know he’s on borrowed time but he’s been ok recently just living a quiet life.

They’re taking him to our vet this afternoon so I’ll know more later but I’m so frightened that they’ll say he’s too bad to keep going until we get back.

We could technically abort the holiday and fly home tomorrow but it’s not quite as simple as that as DH has to stay here for work for another 2 weeks, so it would be just me & toddler DS going home early and extending the time he and DH spend apart (which they both absolutely hate, thus us piggybacking part of his work trip in the first place).

Praying that they can keep him content and comfortable until Thursday. If he has to go after that then I’ve already come to terms with it as it’s been on the cards for a while. I just want his final moments to be with me (as lovely and kind as our cattery owners and vets are).

I'm so sorry, what awful timing. I'm thinking of you this afternoon x

So sorry to hear this , remember the last loving thing you can do for them
is to make sure they do not suffer a moment longer than they need to
Fingers crossed he is comfortable until you can be with him , this is the difficult part of being a pet owner . 💐

I'm so sorry to read this.
I hope he's okay until you can get to him.

So sorry, OP. I hope the vets can help 🤍

They could either hospitalise him with extensive care and hope I make it back in time (if I went tomorrow) or put him to sleep today, so after half a hour of awful decision making, ultimately for him that seemed kinder. I could speak to him on FaceTime and the cattery owners who also love him were with him 😔

I'm so sorry Flowers you did the kindest thing in the situation x

Oh that's so sad. I'm very sorry for the loss of your beloved cat.

Thank you both. I’m so glad that I was able to speak to him and hope he could recognise my voice, silly as it sounds. It still feels a bit surreal and abstract but I keep welling up. Now I need to figure out how best to explain it to our toddler that loved him. Friends may be able to go into ours and remove his litter tray and food bowls before we get home, which may help I suppose.

Aaah sweetheart you poor thing. I lost my old cat in December so totally understand your loss and ultimately you have to do what’s best for the cat. It’s good you coujd talk over the phone. I’m sure he had a lovely happy life as you obviously love him very much xxx
