Lost our lovely boy yesterday so devastated.

I often read all the Litter Tray posts but haven’t ever written on here before. I hope that’s ok. I just need to tell people who won’t say ‘it was only a cat’, as my boss has just intimated when I phoned to say I can’t come in today (I tried and got dressed but just couldn’t make it any further).

My wonderful 8 year old boy was run over yesterday afternoon. I received a phone call from a local vets to say someone had handed his body in. Which I’m really grateful they were kind enough to do, otherwise I’d have never known.

I’ve lost cats before, like to think I’m reasonably level headed, but this has knocked me sideways. I didn’t even cry when my Mum died, but I literally can’t stop breaking down. He was so special (and I know everyone’s cat is). Such a character and such a sweetheart. Never had a cat that affectionate before, constant headbutts as kisses, always climbing on me at the wrong moment, especially when I was running late…..

For various reasons my life is a bit shit at the moment and he was my only constant. He was worshipped - and he knew that at least. I loved him so very much. Just feel ridiculously sad and I know I need to pull myself together for work tomorrow.

Thank for listening.

I'm so sorry.

I said goodbye to my elderly boy at the weekend, it was hard but knew it was on the cards. It must be such a shock to lose him so suddenly. Be kind to yourself.

Thecomedyclub · 15/09/2026 10:32

So sorry to read this. It must be hard and more so as your cat sounded adorable. All the best, and an unmumsnetty hug.

ghostyslovesheets · 15/09/2026 10:34

I’m so sorry x He sounds like an amazing cat 💐

Applepe · 15/09/2026 10:39

I’m so sorry. It’s such a shock when it ends like this. I still miss my two boys because they didn’t have a bite or scratch in them, so gentle. I try to remember that they were loved, looked after and cherished for all of their lives, like yours was, some animals never have that chance. x

MangoMask · 15/09/2026 11:23

I’m so sorry CocoPlum, that must have been so difficult. I don’t think there’s any good way to lose them. Both are equally hard.

Maybe you’re right and it’s the shock that’s making me feel so bad. I can’t bring myself to move his feeding bowls or anything else yet. All my coffee mugs have black cats on them so I even cried into my coffee this morning ! Doesn’t seem right to clear it all so soon, but I’m probably wrong.

He was wonderful, as they all are to be honest. Always had to have his tail curled round my ankle or foot when standing next to me. Called him my baby Cling-on. This wasn’t very helpful at times as he was a black cat (invisible ninja) and I tripped over him more times than I can tell you.

Thank you all so much for your posts. Feel a tiny bit less alone.

What a handsome cutie! It is so hard - they are a member of your family. Big hugs, and just hold on to the fact that you gave him a loving caring life xx

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 15/09/2026 12:00

He was a lovely boy!
Of course you're devastated.
I'm so sorry to hear about his death, and how nasty of your boss to say he was "just a cat". He was a special boy.

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · 15/09/2026 12:17

I totally get it. My girl died very suddenly last Thursday. And I’m still reeling from the shock. Fortunately my work colleagues have been amazing. And my friends are cat people. Having been through it before, i promise it does get easier. You’ll never forget your boy. But in time you will be able to remember him and smile.

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · 15/09/2026 12:19

I get the not wanting to move the bowls. I had to wash Penelope’s out as they had tuna in. But I can’t bring my self to empty her water bowls.

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing · 15/09/2026 12:20

He was absolutely beautiful OP.

MangoMask · 15/09/2026 12:58

InQuiresandplaceswheretheysing I’m so sorry for you loss. I read the threads about your beautiful Penelope.

I’m so glad your friends and colleagues were supportive. I think that’s one of the reasons I couldn’t go into work today. There are a few toxic people (just a few the rest are lovely) where I work and life is very difficult there at the moment. I’m desperately searching for a new job anyway. Even if they bothered to express faux sympathy they would be laughing behind my back at my devastation. This is why I loved coming home to my boy - unconditional love.

But tomorrow hopefully I’ll be strong enough to ignore it at least…

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply.

I'm shocked your colleagues could be so callous but then remember when we finally got the blood test results from the vet over the phone for our dog that hadn't eaten for four days and was very poorly and being syringed fed water. We had to book that afternoon to have her pts. Went in to tell my boss I had to leave to go home and she was really very unsympathetic. I wasn't living with my BF at the time but the dog had been a constant in my life daily for 14 yrs and I'd loved her as my own. I couldn't have left BF at this awful time much less our beautiful dog who I held as she was pts.

Returning to work on Monday I once again apologised for leaving early expecting her to apologise about being so unreasonable towards me on the Friday or to maybe have gained some empathy over the weekend but was told to never repeat my actions!!! What a cow! I was only freelance too!

Very sorry for your loss.

MangoMask · 15/09/2026 14:11

I’m so sorry for your loss HangryBrickShark. That must have been really hard.

I get not everyone is an ‘animal person’ but you can still show compassion and empathy to others.

My boss has repeatedly told me he hates cats, so I wasn’t expecting much 🙃.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your lovely boy. I lost my sweet sweet 13 year old ginger boy yesterday too, I cried so much... And worse, DH had to take him for his final ride to the vet because I had to get on a flight (business trip) and the guilt of not being with him was overwhelming.

So - really feel for you, I'm there too, it's very hard...

MangoMask · 15/09/2026 15:15

Oh YertleTheTurtle that must have been so tough to have to fly off on your business trip. I hope you don’t carry that guilt long because if there’s one thing I know for certain - it’s that my boy knew how loved and appreciated he was and I’m sure yours did too.

Sending a hug to wherever you are.

YertleTheTurtle · 15/09/2026 15:23

Thank you, mine also knew he was very loved (and ridiculously spoilt)

We never forgot them either do we? They embed themselves in our hearts....

Breadcat24 · 15/09/2026 15:34

@MangoMask so sorry, he sounds like a lovely cat. I cried buckets over Breadcat. Hugs

RaspberryRiddle · 15/09/2026 15:36

I'm so, so sorry OP - I would think that no other response than yours would be appropriate. We bring them into our lives, have complete responsibility for them and they give us so much back. He sounds like a very precious boy💐

TonyDancer · 15/09/2026 15:42

A gorgeous, gorgeous boy and he looks so much like mine. He was your soul cat. He can’t be replaced. My heart will break into a million pieces when my cat goes. We are friends. We’ve had so much fun together. A real journey of ups and downs. He’s cost me a fortune but I’d happily pay it all again to keep him with me. It’s not “just a cat”. It’s a piece of your heart. Sending a hug xx

Poppytime · 15/09/2026 17:48

I’m so so sorry. My boy cat was run over a few months ago and it’s just devastating. He looks like a lovely boy and he will know you loved him very much. Take care xx
