Missing cat, collar found in garden. Any ideas?

My DC and their spouse bought a house last year and soon noticed a cat hanging around for treats. A neighbour told them it had been abandoned by another neighbour-so they started feeding it and then decided to adopt it-got it vet checked, chipped and flea treatment as was very scabby. It has turned out to be such a sweet little cat-obviously well loved at some point in its life as quite friendly. It really landed on its paws with them-lovely food, warmth and love. The vet said it was about 8.

It went missing on Thursday. They let it out around 5 am and it normally comes back around 8 for food even if it wants to stay out. Nothing. My DC went looking and found its collar in their little garden. No sign of the cat or any fur/fighting. But it’s disappeared. They-and I-are very upset. They have asked on the road WhatsApp, put pictures on there and walked around at night calling. They have marked the chip as lost. It’s never done this before-it seemed to love being in a home again. Residential area. The houses either side are empty-one is an old lady in care so her garden is like a dark jungle. Both sides have locked gates so can’t search the back.

Does anyone have any ideas? It’s so upsetting-she’s a lovely little thing and they’re devastated They were so proud of their first home and their sweet pet. Any ideas of what to do or what has worked for you would be so appreciated.

Leaflet all the neighbours and door knock, asking them to look in sheds and garages in case she's got trapped. Report her to all the local vets and cat rescues as lost, giving them the description and chip number. Put a tray with some of her litter outside the door she normally uses

We had a cat (who’s with us temporarily while his owner - my MIL - renovates her new house) go AWOL a couple of weeks ago and did all the above, plus flyered nearby streets and put posters up in eg the local community centre. I also posted in the community FB group. People were so kind ringing and messaging, and we quickly realised he was mainly in the gardens our street backs on to. He would just stare us out when we went to a sighting then cruise off before we could get hold of him!

He was gone for six days but eventually sauntered back none the worse for wear other than a bit of a dodgy tummy. (He was wolfing down our cat’s food as well as his own, and god knows what he ate while off on his adventures.)

Thank you-that makes me more hopeful-they have joined the local WhatsApp but will ask them to join the local Facebook too.

Also try Nextdoor.

OP You need to check the empty houses!! My neighbour’s cat went missing, and the empty house next door had had workmen in, cat went in during the day and got locked in.
